Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care for medical and surgical patients, including pre- and post-operative monitoring, pain assessment and management, wound care, and daily nursing procedures to ensure positive patient outcomes.
  • Prepare patients and surgical suites by performing surgical scrub, instrument set-up, sterile technique, and pass instruments during procedures while adhering to aseptic protocols and surgical checklists.

  • Run and interpret common in-house laboratory diagnostics (CBC, chemistry panels, urinalysis, SNAP tests), maintain quality control records, troubleshoot instrument issues, and communicate results to veterinary staff promptly.
  • Place and maintain IV catheters, fluid therapy, blood transfusions, and fluid calculations, adjusting treatment under veterinarian direction and documenting intake/output, drug doses, and response to therapy.
  • Perform emergency triage and stabilization techniques including CPR, airway management, hemorrhage control, wound stabilization, shock therapy, pain control, and rapid diagnostics under emergency protocols.
  • Operate diagnostic imaging equipment including digital radiography and dental x-ray, perform accurate patient positioning, adhere to radiation safety standards, and develop or process images for veterinarian interpretation.
  • Administer medications (oral, topical, parenteral) and vaccines as authorized, perform accurate drug calculations, maintain medication logs, verify dosing, and educate clients on drug administration and adverse effects.
  • Maintain accurate, legal medical records and SOAP notes in the practice management system, ensure timely chart updates, discharge instructions, and clinic follow-up scheduling consistent with regulatory and accreditation requirements.

  • Oversee inventory management for pharmaceuticals, medical supplies, and controlled substances including ordering, receiving, storage, expiration monitoring, and compliance with DEA/state controlled substance regulations.
  • Ensure sterilization and maintenance of surgical instruments, autoclave operation, instrument inventory, troubleshooting sterilization cycles, and maintaining sterilization logs to meet infection control standards.
  • Assist in the development and enforcement of safety protocols, OSHA compliance, hazardous material handling (e.g., chemotherapeutics, anesthetic gases), sharps disposal, and workplace biosafety to protect staff and patients.
  • Conduct behavior assessment and low-stress handling techniques to minimize patient stress and risk during restraint, examinations, and procedures; adapt handling strategies for fearful or aggressive animals.
  • Collect and prepare specimens (smears, biopsies, cytology preps) and perform microscopic evaluation with preliminary findings documented for veterinarian review and rapid diagnostic decision-making.
  • Support specialty and referral coordination by preparing medical records, organizing diagnostic images, providing detailed medical summaries, and facilitating clear clinician-to-clinician communication.
  • Participate in practice quality improvement initiatives including morbidity/mortality reviews, infection control audits, patient safety reporting, and SOP development to enhance clinical care and compliance.
  • Train, mentor, and supervise junior technicians, veterinary assistants and students; design on-the-job training plans, conduct competency assessments, and deliver feedback to build a high-performing clinical team.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Associate of Applied Science (AAS) or Associate Degree in Veterinary Technology from an accredited program and current state CVT/LVT/RVT license or certification (e.g., VTNE pass and state licensure).

  • Bachelor's degree in Veterinary Technology, Animal Science, or related biological science.
