Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate and monitor chemical processing equipment (reactors, distillation columns, centrifuges, mixers, pumps, heat exchangers) to execute batch and continuous production runs in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and written batch records.
  • Set up, start, stop and adjust process equipment and instrumentation (flow meters, level controls, temperature controllers, pressure gauges) to maintain process parameters within specified control limits and ensure consistent product quality.
  • Follow detailed batch sheets and SOPs to weigh, measure, and mix raw materials, accurately documenting batch data, reagent lots, quantities, temperatures, and times for full traceability and compliance with cGMP and internal quality systems.
  • Monitor automated control systems (PLC, DCS, SCADA) and alarms, respond promptly to deviations, perform first-level troubleshooting, and escalate unresolved control or process anomalies to engineering or maintenance teams.
  • Perform routine sampling during production and coordinate with QC laboratory for timely analysis of pH, viscosity, concentration, particle size, and other critical quality attributes; document results and initiate containment or corrective actions if specifications are not met.
  • Conduct in-process quality checks and visually inspect product streams, finished product containers, and packaging for conformity; quarantine nonconforming materials and complete nonconformance reports as required.
  • Carry out routine preventive maintenance tasks and minor repairs (valve adjustments, gasket replacements, pump seal swaps) following lockout/tagout (LOTO) and confined space entry procedures to ensure equipment reliability and safe operation.
  • Maintain accurate production logs, electronic batch records, shift handover notes, and sanitation checklists to support regulatory compliance, audits, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Execute safe chemical handling, transfer, and dosing operations including use of chemical feed pumps, dosing systems, and metering devices while following MSDS/SDS guidelines and PPE requirements to prevent spills and exposures.
  • Ensure process utilities (steam, compressed air, cooling water, vacuum) are operating within specification and communicate utility issues to operators or utility technicians to avoid production interruptions.
  • Participate in start-ups, shutdowns, and changeover activities for product runs, including proper flushing, cleaning, and line clearance procedures to prevent cross-contamination and ensure allergen/chemical segregation where required.
  • Respond to plant emergencies, spills, and releases, performing immediate containment, neutralization, and cleanup actions per EHS procedures and notifying supervisors and incident response teams as necessary.
  • Execute product transfer and loading/unloading operations for raw materials and finished goods, including satellite tank filling, railcar/truck unloading supervision, and use of hose-in-hose systems while ensuring proper grounding and bonding to control static.
  • Support root cause investigations for process upsets, product quality failures, or equipment breakdowns by providing shift logs, trend data, and firsthand process observations to cross-functional teams.
  • Train and mentor new operators and temporary employees on safe operating practices, SOPs, emergency procedures, and routine process checks; conduct shift handovers that emphasize critical control points and current process status.
  • Maintain cleanliness and housekeeping of the production area, containment zones, and equipment rooms to meet internal housekeeping standards, EHS regulations, and audit readiness.
  • Execute proper hazardous waste segregation, labeling, temporary storage, and documentation for disposal contractors in accordance with local regulations and company waste management programs.
  • Participate in continuous improvement activities (Kaizen events, 5S, root cause analysis, P-FMEA) to reduce waste, improve yield, improve cycle times, and increase overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).
  • Maintain compliance with regulatory requirements (EPA, DOT, local environmental laws), company policies, and permits for air emissions, wastewater, and chemical storage; support environmental monitoring and reporting activities.
  • Perform line clearances, verify material identity, and use barcode/RFID scanning or electronic batch systems to ensure correct raw material usage and prevent mix-ups in production.
  • Collaborate with maintenance to schedule and support planned outages and turnaround activities, providing operator insight into critical process steps and assisting with isolation and permit coordination.
  • Adhere to and actively promote PPE protocols, respiratory protection programs, and other EHS initiatives; complete required training and competency assessments to maintain certifications.
  • Use computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and production management systems (ERP, SAP, Oracle) to log work orders, inventory usage, and production outputs to ensure accurate record-keeping.
  • Apply basic chemical calculations (percent concentration, dilution factors, solution preparation) and read engineering drawings and P&IDs to verify process flows and instrumentation locations.
  • Continuously monitor process trends and performance metrics, suggest process adjustments and efficiency improvements, and support pilot runs or scale-up testing in coordination with process engineering.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist quality and R&D teams with pilot-scale trials, scale-up runs, and experimental batches by executing controlled production steps and collecting detailed process data for validation and analysis.
  • Support materials management by verifying incoming raw material shipments, inspecting containers for integrity, and coordinating material staging and inventory rotations to ensure FIFO and lot traceability.
  • Prepare and maintain calibration records for critical instruments and coordinate periodic calibration activities with instrumentation technicians to preserve measurement accuracy.
  • Actively participate in internal and external audits by preparing records, supporting walkthroughs, and implementing corrective actions to close nonconformances identified during inspections.
  • Create step-by-step job aids, SOP updates, and visual process controls to improve operator performance, reduce human error, and accelerate onboarding for new hires.
  • Support the continuous rollout of digital tools (electronic batch records, LIMS, SCADA improvements) by providing operator feedback and assisting in user acceptance testing and training.
  • Help coordinate contractor access, permits, and oversight during outsourced maintenance or installation activities to ensure safety and adherence to site policies.
  • Participate in cross-functional safety committees and hazard analysis sessions to proactively address emerging process safety risks and adopt leading practices.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficient in operating and troubleshooting PLC/DCS/SCADA-based control systems and interpreting alarm logs and trends to maintain process stability.
  • Strong understanding of chemical process equipment: reactors, distillation towers, heat exchangers, centrifuges, static mixers, pumps, valves, and storage tanks.
  • Knowledge of batch manufacturing practices, batch record completion, and electronic batch record systems (EBR).

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED required; vocational certificate in process technology or related field preferred.

  • Certifications in process safety (HAZWOPER), confined space, LOTO, or additional EHS/technical training.
