The Chief Knowledge Officer (CKO) is a senior executive who shapes and delivers the organization's enterprise knowledge strategy, governance, and platforms. The CKO ensures that critical institutional knowledge is captured, organized, discoverable and reused to accelerate decision-making, drive innovation, reduce risk, and improve operational performance. This role partners with the C-suite, business unit leaders, IT and HR to integrate knowledge management, taxonomy, search, and AI-driven discovery into the digital workplace and product lifecycle.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop and own the enterprise knowledge strategy and roadmap that aligns with corporate objectives, including knowledge capture, taxonomy, curation, search, and reuse to drive measurable business outcomes such as time-to-answer, reduced rework, and faster onboarding.
  • Lead governance for knowledge assets by defining policies, roles, ownership, lifecycle management, metadata standards, and compliance controls to ensure content quality, retention, and regulatory adherence across the organization.
  • Design and implement enterprise taxonomies, ontologies and metadata frameworks that enable consistent classification, tagging, semantic relationships, and contextual discovery across systems and content repositories.
  • Architect and select knowledge platforms and enterprise search technologies (e.g., search indexes, semantic/graph engines, knowledge hubs) and define integration patterns with collaboration tools (SharePoint, Confluence, Teams, Google Workspace), CRM, and product systems.
  • Drive the incorporation of AI, NLP and semantic search capabilities (including LLMs where appropriate) into knowledge discovery and recommendation engines to surface relevant content, automate tagging, summarize documents, and enable conversational interfaces.
  • Lead cross-functional programs to consolidate content, migrate legacy repositories, retire duplicate artifacts, and standardize the content lifecycle and publishing workflows across business units.
  • Sponsor and scale communities of practice, expert networks and knowledge champions to encourage knowledge creation, peer-to-peer sharing, and consistent use of KM tools and methodologies.
  • Establish and track KPIs and ROI models for knowledge initiatives (e.g., search success rate, content reuse, employee productivity gains, cost avoidance) and report performance and strategic value to the executive team and board.
  • Oversee the design and delivery of knowledge transfer and retention programs (including succession knowledge capture and critical role shadowing) to mitigate institutional knowledge loss, especially during reorganizations and retirements.
  • Drive change management, adoption plans and communications to integrate KM practices into daily workflows, ensuring sustained behavior change through training, incentives and governance.
  • Partner with HR and L&D to embed knowledge capture into onboarding, training curricula and performance frameworks so that tacit knowledge becomes codified and reusable.
  • Negotiate and manage vendor relationships, contracts and SLAs for KM platforms, search vendors, consulting services and AI providers; drive vendor evaluation, PoCs and procurement decisions.
  • Collaborate with Legal, Security and Privacy teams to ensure knowledge initiatives comply with data protection policies, IP management, confidentiality requirements and retention schedules.
  • Lead knowledge-centric product programs that capture customer insights, troubleshooting guides, and product documentation to accelerate support resolution and improve customer experience and product development cycles.
  • Facilitate enterprise-wide knowledge audits and content inventories to identify high-value knowledge assets, redundancy, gaps and opportunities for consolidation or enrichment.
  • Define and operationalize metadata governance and quality assurance processes, including automated quality checks, human review cycles and feedback loops to maintain trusted knowledge repositories.
  • Drive the integration of knowledge management into agile delivery lifecycles and product development, ensuring lessons learned, decision rationales, and architectural knowledge are recorded and discoverable.
  • Create and maintain executive-level dashboards and narratives that translate KM metrics into business risks, opportunities and investment recommendations.
  • Lead cross-functional workshops and governance councils to prioritize knowledge initiatives, resolve conflicts over content ownership and accelerate cross-business collaboration.
  • Champion knowledge monetization and new revenue opportunities by identifying ways to productize IP, structured know-how, or curated content while respecting licensing and compliance constraints.
  • Manage the KM budget, staffing model, organizational structure and talent development for knowledge engineers, information architects, taxonomists, content curators and community managers.
  • Evaluate and pilot emerging technologies in the knowledge domain (semantic web, knowledge graphs, retrieval augmented generation) to maintain a competitive edge and reduce manual work.
  • Ensure resilient knowledge continuity plans for crisis response, M&A integrations and rapid scaling events, including accelerated knowledge capture and targeted knowledge mobilization programs.
  • Provide executive coaching and mentorship to leaders on knowledge-sharing behaviors, decision documentation and preserving institutional memory across remote and hybrid working environments.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Science, Library & Information Studies, Computer Science, Business Administration, or related field.

Preferred Education:

  • Master's degree or advanced certification (e.g., MSc/MA in Information Science, Knowledge Management, MBA, ML/AI specialization, Certified Information Professional).
