Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead the development and execution of a comprehensive, multi-year nursing strategy that aligns with organizational goals, improves patient outcomes, supports population health initiatives, optimizes care delivery models, and drives measurable improvements in quality and safety across inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Serve as the senior clinical leader responsible for the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of nursing practice standards, clinical protocols, evidence-based care pathways, and professional practice models that reduce variability, prevent harm, and elevate patient experience.
  • Provide executive oversight for patient safety and quality programs including infection prevention, falls prevention, pressure injury prevention, adverse event reduction, root cause analysis, and interdisciplinary performance improvement projects tied to HCAHPS, CMS core measures, and other regulatory metrics.
  • Direct nursing workforce planning and staffing strategy across the enterprise — designing staffing models, acuity-based staffing systems, float pools, and contingency plans to ensure safe nurse-to-patient ratios, manage overtime and agency use, and control labor costs while maintaining care standards.
  • Own the nursing budget and fiscal stewardship for nursing services, including operating budgets, capital planning for nursing-related investments, productivity targets, FTE forecasting, and partnership with finance to achieve cost-containment while supporting strategic clinical investments.
  • Lead talent management and workforce development programs: recruitment and retention strategies, clinical career ladders, residencies/orientations, succession planning, leadership development, preceptor programs, and academic partnerships to build bench strength for current and future nursing leadership.
  • Provide visible clinical leadership and rounding across units and care sites to build trust with frontline staff, assess clinical practice, model expected behaviors, listen to operational barriers, coach leaders, and drive rapid-cycle improvements based on real-time data.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Master’s degree in Healthcare Administration/Business (MHA/MBA) with active RN licensure.

Preferred Education:

  • Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) or PhD in Nursing, or combined clinical and business graduate degrees; advanced leadership certifications are a plus.
