Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Plan, prioritize and manage daily CNC production schedules to meet customer delivery dates while maximizing machine utilization, minimizing setup time, and balancing throughput across mills, lathes, and multi-axis centers.
  • Oversee and coach CNC supervisors, programmers, setup technicians and machinists to ensure consistent adherence to work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safety and lockout/tagout protocols.
  • Direct the development, validation and deployment of CNC programs (G-code) in collaboration with CAD/CAM programmers to optimize cycle times, toolpaths, feeds and speeds for complex parts and tight tolerances.
  • Implement and maintain tooling, fixture and measuring equipment strategies, including tool life monitoring, regrinding, tool crib management and fixture inspection schedules to reduce downtime and scrap.
  • Lead root cause analysis and corrective action processes (8D, DMAIC) for recurring quality issues, non-conformances and supplier-related defects to improve first pass yield and reduce warranty risk.
  • Establish and enforce quality control checkpoints, in-process inspection plans, CMM routines and final inspection criteria consistent with GD&T, print requirements and customer-specific requirements.
  • Manage capacity planning, workforce scheduling, overtime approvals and shift assignments to meet production peaks while controlling labor cost and overtime exposure.
  • Drive continuous improvement and lean manufacturing initiatives—5S, Kanban, SMED, value stream mapping—to reduce lead time, increase shop floor flexibility and lower unit cost.
  • Monitor and report key performance indicators (KPIs) including OEE, scrap rate, on-time delivery, cycle time, throughput and cost per part; present actionable insights to senior management.
  • Coordinate preventative and corrective maintenance programs for CNC equipment with maintenance technicians and external service providers to minimize downtime and extend machine life.
  • Lead new product introduction (NPI) launch activities for machining operations, including capability studies, process validation, first article inspection (FAI) and volume ramp planning.
  • Maintain and enforce workplace safety programs and compliance with OSHA, customer safety requirements and internal policies, conducting audits and incident investigations as required.
  • Optimize inventory of raw materials, tooling, cutting tools and consumables through close collaboration with purchasing and supply chain, reducing stockouts and excess inventory.
  • Oversee the selection, evaluation and onboarding of CNC machine suppliers, tooling vendors and subcontractors, negotiating service agreements and ensuring supplier performance to quality and delivery standards.
  • Manage change control for process changes, tooling updates and engineering revisions while ensuring revision traceability, updated work instructions and operator training.
  • Develop and deliver structured training programs for CNC machining skills, fixture setup, troubleshooting, measurement and safety to continuously upskill the workforce.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards and customer-specific quality systems (ISO 9001, AS9100, IATF 16949), supporting audits and corrective action requests as the operations point of contact.
  • Use ERP/MRP systems to release orders, track WIP, update routing information and reconcile production transactions, collaborating with materials planning to ensure flow and visibility.
  • Oversee cost control and budget management for the machining department, identifying cost-saving opportunities through process optimization, energy savings and scrap reduction.
  • Serve as primary interface between engineering, quality, purchasing and production to resolve manufacturability issues, tolerance negotiations and assembly fit concerns prior to production.
  • Drive adoption of digital manufacturing tools—toolpath simulation, downtime tracking, SPC software and machine data collection—to enable predictive maintenance and process stability.
  • Evaluate and implement automation opportunities such as pallet systems, gantry loaders, and robotic tending to improve throughput and reduce manual handling risks.
  • Support customer visits, technical reviews and escalation management by preparing production performance reports, corrective action status and demonstrating control of critical processes.

Secondary Functions

  • Support cross-functional cost reduction projects and capital equipment justification by providing productivity and utilization data and ROI estimates.
  • Participate in supplier quality development and qualification programs for outsourced machining or finishing operations.
  • Assist HR with recruitment, interviewing and onboarding of CNC technical staff; maintain competency matrices and succession plans.
  • Coordinate with engineering on design for manufacturability (DFM) recommendations that reduce machining time and complexity.
  • Maintain and archive production documentation, process certifications, calibration records and inspection reports for traceability and audit readiness.
  • Facilitate weekly production meetings, shift handovers and continuous improvement huddles to align priorities and remove barriers to flow.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Expert knowledge of CNC machining processes across mills, lathes, turning centers, 4/5-axis machining and turning/milling centers.
  • Proficient in CAD/CAM systems (e.g., Mastercam, Fusion 360, SolidWorks CAM, PowerMill) and experience translating CAD models into optimized toolpaths.
  • Strong understanding of G-code, macro programming, conversational CNC controls and the ability to troubleshoot NC programs on the shop floor.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing) and the ability to interpret complex engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Experience with ERP/MRP systems (e.g., Epicor, SAP, Oracle NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics) for production scheduling, order release and inventory control.
  • Familiarity with SPC, CMM programming, inspection techniques and metrology equipment to maintain tight process capability.
  • Proven experience implementing lean manufacturing tools: SMED, 5S, Kanban, value stream mapping and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Equipment maintenance and reliability knowledge including predictive and preventative maintenance programs and vendor maintenance management.
  • Strong budgeting, cost accounting and CAPEX planning skills including ROI analysis for new machine purchases and automation projects.
  • Experience managing supplier relationships, qualifying subcontractors and negotiating tooling and service contracts.
  • Knowledge of regulatory and quality standards such as ISO 9001, AS9100, IATF 16949 and customer-specific compliance requirements.
  • Competence with manufacturing data systems, OEE tracking, downtime capture and familiarity with IIoT data sources for machine monitoring.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Associate degree in Manufacturing Technology, Industrial Maintenance, Machining Technology or equivalent military/industry experience.

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or Operations Management.
