Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Set up and operate CNC tool presetters to measure and record precise tool length, diameter and corner radius offsets; upload and verify offsets in CNC controls and tool management systems to ensure first-piece accuracy and minimize trial-and-error setup time.
  • Preset, build and maintain tool assemblies (indexables, end mills, drills, taps, reamers, form tools), ensuring correct holders (HSK, CAT, BT), adaptors and collets are used and that runout and balance meet tolerance specifications.
  • Recondition and regrind cutting tools using CNC tool grinders and manual grinding equipment to restore cutting geometry, re-establish chip breakers and extend tool life while documenting wear rates.
  • Perform detailed tool inspection and metrology using micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, dial indicators and optical comparators; document measurements, record tool wear and adjust or replace tools to maintain process capability.
  • Troubleshoot machining issues caused by tooling such as chatter, tool breakage, poor surface finish, incorrect tolerances or excessive cycle time; drive corrective actions with production, CAM and engineering teams and document root cause analysis.
  • Maintain and reconcile tool crib inventory: issue/receive tools, label and store assemblies, maintain bin locations, perform cycle counts, set reorder points and liaise with purchasing to ensure uninterrupted production.
  • Configure and qualify new tooling for production and New Product Introduction (NPI) runs by building prototypes, validating cutting parameters, verifying tool life and providing setup sheets and documentation for production operators.
  • Collaborate with CAM programmers to recommend tooling choices, cutting parameters, tool orientations and strategies for efficient and collision-free toolpaths, including providing accurate tool geometry data for simulation.
  • Update and maintain tool management software and ERP master data (e.g., TDM, Zoller, SAP) with accurate tool numbers, offsets, lifecycle logs, supplier information and setup documentation to enable traceability and efficient changeover.
  • Assemble, balance and qualify rotating tooling and high-speed spindle systems; perform balancing and runout correction to reduce vibration and improve surface finish and tool life.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance and calibration of tool-room equipment (tool grinder, presetter, balancer, ultrasonic cleaner, inspection devices); keep maintenance logs and escalate repairs to maintenance/purchasing when required.
  • Create and maintain tooling documentation including setup sheets, route cards, tooling lists, cutter data sheets, reconditioning logs and standard work to ensure consistent changeovers and operator understanding.
  • Evaluate tooling cost vs performance and implement cost-control strategies: tool consolidation, reconditioning programs, supplier consolidation and lifecycle optimization to reduce cost per part.
  • Participate in continuous improvement and 5S initiatives to keep the tool room organized, compliant with safety standards, and optimized for quick changeover and controlled inventory.
  • Train and mentor CNC operators and apprentices on proper tool handling, presetting procedures, correct indexing and storage practices, and basic troubleshooting to reduce tooling-related downtime.
  • Inspect incoming tooling and accessories against purchase orders and technical specifications; accept or quarantine non-conforming items and coordinate returns or supplier corrective action.
  • Support process qualification and capability studies by supplying tooling setups, performing trial runs, and logging tool wear and failure modes for statistical process control (SPC) analysis.
  • Design and fabricate special tool fixtures, custom boring bars, extension assemblies and custom adaptors for non-standard operations or hard-to-reach features, working from prints or verbal requirements.
  • Coordinate with suppliers for technical escalation on cutting tool geometry, coatings, and carbide grades; test new tooling technologies and present performance summaries to stakeholders.
  • Implement tool life management strategies including lifetime limits, reconditioning cycles, and wear monitoring to avoid in-process scrap and maximize tool usage without risking part quality.
  • Maintain compliance with workplace safety regulations, PPE requirements and hazardous material handling (e.g., coolant, grinding dust); enforce safe handling and storage of tools and abrasives.

  • Assist engineering and production in tooling-related cost estimates and time studies for new jobs or process changes.
  • Maintain and organize tooling drawings, technical data sheets and supplier catalogs for easy retrieval by production and programming teams.
  • Support continuous improvement projects by supplying tooling data, participating in Kaizen events, and validating proposed tooling changes for performance gains.
  • Coordinate tooling changeovers during scheduled production shifts to minimize machine downtime and ensure correct setup documentation is followed.
  • Support supplier qualification activities by performing incoming inspections, trial runs and providing performance feedback and failure reports.
  • Provide ad-hoc tooling expertise to cross-functional teams including quality, maintenance and procurement for root cause analysis and corrective action plans.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficient operation of electronic tool presetters (e.g., Zoller, Haimer) and accurate transfer of offsets to CNC controls.
  • Tool reconditioning and grinding skills using manual and CNC tool grinders; familiarity with edge prep, chip breaker profiles and regrind cycles.
  • Strong metrology skills: micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, dial indicators, runout measurement and optical inspection.
  • Knowledge of tool holder standards and systems (HSK, CAT/BT, DIN, shrink-fit) and associated setup and balancing procedures.
  • Experience with tool management software (TDM, Zoller, ToolScope) and ERP systems (SAP, Oracle) for tooling master data and inventory control.

  • CAM collaboration: ability to provide accurate tool geometry and recommended feeds/speeds for CAM programmers and simulation accuracy.
  • Preventive maintenance and calibration of tool-room equipment and a working knowledge of safe grinding and abrasive handling practices.
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing practices, 5S in the tool room and continuous improvement methodologies (Kaizen).
  • Basic electrical/mechanical aptitude for minor repairs to tooling fixtures and test assemblies.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED with hands-on tooling/machining experience.

Preferred Education:

  • Technical diploma or associate degree in Machining, Manufacturing Technology, Tool and Die or a related field.
  • Certifications in metrology, tooling, or CNC fundamentals (preferred but not required).

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 2–7 years in a tool room, CNC machining or tooling-focused manufacturing environment.

Preferred: 3–5+ years as a CNC Tooling Technician, Toolroom Specialist, or experienced CNC machinist with demonstrable tool-building, presetter and reconditioning background; experience with tool management software and shopfloor ERP systems preferred.
