Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Prepare accurate 2D construction drawings and detailed shop drawings from architect and engineer design files, ensuring all drawings meet project standards, company CAD/BIM protocols, and local code requirements.
- Produce and maintain coordinated Revit/BIM models for architectural, structural and MEP disciplines; perform regular model updates and ensure BIM content adheres to project deliverables and LOD requirements.
- Convert concept sketches, markups, RFIs, and design intent documents into fully-detailed, buildable plans, sections, and elevation drawings suitable for permitting and fabrication.
- Generate and maintain as-built and record drawings by capturing site measurements, revising drawings after changes in the field, and ensuring the record set accurately reflects installed conditions.
- Create detailed fabrication and installation drawings for structural steel, wood framing, curtainwall, millwork, HVAC ductwork, plumbing and electrical components, including cut lists, part schedules and connection details.
- Coordinate drawing content and interfaces between architectural, structural and MEP disciplines by resolving clashes, identifying design conflicts, and documenting coordination decisions in meeting minutes and revision logs.
- Perform quantity takeoffs and prepare material lists directly from drawings to support procurement, cost estimation and subcontractor bidding; ensure items are clearly labelled and dimensioned for fabrication.
- Prepare permit application drawings and collate supporting documentation, code references and specification excerpts required for municipal review and building department approvals.
- Manage drawing revision control and document distribution: maintain revision histories, issue drawings to stakeholders, maintain transmittal records and ensure only current drawings are circulated on the project.
- Review contractor and supplier shop drawings and submittals for compliance with the design intent; annotate required corrections, integrate approved vendor details into the model/drawing set and re-issue as necessary.
- Interpret structural and MEP engineer calculations and incorporate required dimensions, connections and details into working drawings while maintaining coordination with design engineers.
- Conduct regular site visits and field surveys to verify conditions, take accurate measurements, photograph site conditions, and validate the practicality of proposed details and sequencing.
- Perform clash detection and coordination reviews using Navisworks (or equivalent), document detected issues, collaborate with discipline leads to resolve clashes and update models/drawings accordingly.
- Create detailed installation and assembly instructions, including exploded views and sequencing notes for complex prefabricated assemblies, to assist field crews and subcontractors during installation.
- Maintain and enforce CAD/BIM standards, layer naming conventions, naming templates and title block data across projects to ensure consistency, quality and interoperability of deliverables.
- Produce construction details and typical details (waterproofing, flashing, expansion joints, connection details) that comply with manufacturer recommendations and applicable building codes.
- Provide technical support to site supervisors and field crews by clarifying drawings, responding to RFIs, issuing field sketches and providing rapid redraws to avoid construction delays.
- Utilize laser scanning, point cloud data and survey files to generate as-built Revit models and 2D drawings when retrofitting or renovating existing structures.
- Prepare shop-check drawings for prefabrication trades, coordinate approval cycles with fabricators, and incorporate fabricator feedback to finalize drawings ready for production.
- Lead quality control (QC) checks on drawing sets prior to issuance, reviewing dimensions, notes, tolerances and references for accuracy and completeness.
- Liaise with suppliers, fabricators and specialty subcontractors to obtain dimensional data, mounting details and product-specific information to ensure drawings reflect real-world installation constraints.
- Create and maintain schedules, panel layouts, and detailed diagrams for equipment installation (e.g., HVAC units, switchgear, control panels) to support field installation and commissioning.
- Document and implement changes resulting from change orders, site variations or engineering revisions; update drawings, notify stakeholders and maintain a clear audit trail of changes.
- Train and mentor junior drafters and CAD technicians, provide guidance on best practices, templates, and constructive feedback to elevate team output quality.
Secondary Functions
- Support project teams with pre-construction drawing reviews and constructability input to reduce rework and identify potential cost/schedule impacts early.
- Participate in coordination meetings and design review workshops, recording action items and follow-up drawing revisions.
- Assist project managers by producing presentation drawings, layout plans and visualizations for client meetings and approvals.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of drafting workflows, templates and standard detail libraries to drive efficiency across projects.
- Help maintain the company’s drawing archive and digital project records, ensuring easy retrieval for future renovations or claims support.
- Support health and safety compliance by incorporating safety access and hoarding details into construction drawings when required.
- Aid procurement teams by clarifying drawing-based specifications during vendor qualification and tender clarification periods.
- Provide occasional on-call drawing updates to respond to urgent site requests and minimize construction downtime.
