Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Assume full legal and operational command of the container vessel, ensuring safe navigation, compliance with international conventions (SOLAS, MARPOL, ISM, STCW, ISPS) and company safety management systems at all times.
  • Prepare, approve and execute comprehensive voyage plans including optimal routing, weather routing, passage planning, ETA management and contingency planning to minimize risk and commercial delays.
  • Oversee and coordinate all cargo operations (stowage planning, segregation, lashing, weight/trim/ballast calculations and stability assessments) to protect vessel integrity and cargo safety during loading, transit and discharge.
  • Manage bridge operations and maintain navigational watch standards, supervise watchkeeping officers, verify proper use of ECDIS, ARPA, radar, AIS and nautical publications and conduct routine navigational audits.
  • Implement and enforce the shipboard Safety Management System (SMS), conduct safety drills and exercises (fire, abandon ship, man overboard, oil spill), and ensure corrective actions from drills and audits are tracked and closed.
  • Direct crew management activities including recruitment liaison, crew rotation planning, welfare management, competency assessments, mentoring, performance reviews and enforcement of STCW training and certification.
  • Ensure compliance with port, coastal state and flag state requirements including customs, immigration, sanitary and environmental inspections, liaise with port agents, flag administration and class surveyors.
  • Oversee fuel and energy management including bunker procurement coordination, monitoring of fuel consumption, implementation of fuel-saving measures, voyage optimization to control bunker and emissions costs.
  • Lead emergency response and incident command for onboard casualties, collisions, groundings, cargo incidents and environmental pollution events, coordinate with rescue authorities and produce incident reports and investigation records.
  • Maintain accurate, complete and up-to-date ship’s logbooks, cargo records, ballast water records, oil record book (ORB), garbage record book, deck and engine operational logs, and prepare official reports as required.
  • Ensure statutory certificates and class surveys are valid and coordinated, arrange and host port/state inspections, flag state audits and classification society surveys; implement rectifications as required.
  • Supervise maintenance and planned preventive maintenance tasks affecting hull, deck gear, lifesaving and firefighting equipment, and ensure contractors and ship staff comply with safety and permit-to-work procedures.
  • Manage vessel commercial performance including charter party execution, voyage reporting to commercial/operations teams, bunkering cost control, laytime awareness, demurrage/dispatch coordination and cargo documentation handover.
  • Coordinate with ship’s chief engineer and technical superintendent to monitor machinery performance, HVAC and refrigerations for reefer containers, ordered repairs, and parts provisioning to minimize off-hire risk.
  • Implement health, safety and environmental (HSE) policies onboard; conduct toolbox talks, risk assessments, near-miss reporting and drive continuous improvement to reduce incidents and environmental footprint.
  • Enforce security procedures in accordance with ISPS code including access control, watch routines, threat assessments and communication with vessel security officers and shoreside security teams.
  • Supervise mooring, unmooring, pilot boarding and handover procedures, ensuring compliance with company SOPs and safe interaction with tugs, port personnel and pilots during port calls.
  • Manage relationships and communications with charterers, cargo interests, port agents, P&I clubs and surveyors to facilitate smooth port calls, claims prevention and resolution of operational disputes.
  • Conduct onboard internal audits for ISM/ISPS and facilitate external audits; ensure timely corrective actions, root cause analysis and reporting to shore management.
  • Prepare and manage shipboard budgets and voyage estimates in coordination with shore operations; control petty cash, spares usage, procurement approvals and supplier interactions.
  • Ensure proper handling, stowage and monitoring of hazardous and special cargoes in accordance with IMDG code, company rules and charter party requirements.
  • Maintain professional competency through continued professional development, attendance at training, refresher courses and awareness of regulatory updates and industry best practices.

Secondary Functions

  • Provide accurate and timely voyage reports, performance metrics and incident summaries to shore-based operations, charterers and stakeholders.
  • Support company initiatives on digitalization of ship-shore data flows, ensuring accurate ECDIS/bridge data exchange and assisting with tech roll-out and feedback from seafarers.
  • Mentor junior officers, support cadet training programs and represent the company at industry recruitment and seafarer welfare events.
  • Participate in root cause investigations, post-incident review boards and implement lessons learned into shipboard procedures and training.
  • Contribute to the company’s sustainability targets by adopting best practices for emissions reduction, ballast water management and energy efficiency measures.
  • Coordinate with shoreside procurement and technical teams for spares, repairs and dry-docking scheduling to minimize downtime and maintain class compliance.
  • Facilitate cargo surveys and condition reporting at load/discharge ports, including coordination of third-party surveyors and supervision of hold/deck condition.
  • Represent vessel management during claims handling and insurance inquiries, provide factual statements and support P&I club investigations.
  • Advise commercial and operations teams on vessel capacity, special cargo constraints and operational limitations to support accurate fixture decisions.
  • Assist in the implementation of crew welfare programs, mental health awareness and fatigue management policies onboard.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Valid Master’s Certificate of Competency (unlimited tonnage or appropriate class) in accordance with STCW and flag state requirements.
  • Advanced navigation and passage planning skills with demonstrated proficiency on ECDIS, ARPA radar, AIS, voyage data recorders (VDR), and electronic nautical publications.
  • Deep knowledge of SOLAS, MARPOL, ISM Code, ISPS Code, MARPOL Annexes, COLREGS and relevant flag/port state regulations.
  • Practical ship stability, trim and stress knowledge, including use of stability software and accurate execution of weight and ballast calculations for container stowage.
  • Proficiency in bridge resource management, watchkeeping procedures and ship handling in confined waters, heavy weather and pilotage situations.
  • Strong understanding of container lashing, securing arrangements, heavy lift planning, stack weight limitations and reefer container systems.
  • Competence in GMDSS communications, emergency distress procedures and coordination with SAR authorities and MRCCs.
  • Experience with bunker procurement processes, fuel sampling and quality checks, and basic fuel management systems to optimize consumption and emissions.
  • Familiarity with classification society procedures, statutory survey processes and rectification tracking systems.
  • Incident investigation, root cause analysis and report writing skills for casualty, pollution or cargo claims.
  • Working knowledge of common shipboard maintenance regimes, PPM (planned preventive maintenance) and experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
  • Ability to interpret charter party clauses, bills of lading, shipping documents and cargo declarations to ensure contractual and legal compliance.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Valid Master’s Certificate of Competency (Class/Flag appropriate) and STCW Manila amendments compliant certificates (e.g., Advanced Firefighting, Medical Care, BRM).

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Nautical Science, Maritime Transportation, Marine Navigation or equivalent maritime academy qualification.
  • Additional certifications: ECDIS type-specific training, GMDSS operator, Advanced Shiphandling, Maritime Law basics, ISM/ISPS internal auditor courses.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 10 to 20+ years of seagoing experience with at least 3–5 years as Chief Officer and 1–3 years in command on similar size container vessels preferred.

Preferred:

  • Command experience on large container ships (Post-Panamax, Neo-Panamax, Ultra Large Container Vessels) operating on global liner trades, with documented track record of safe navigation, cargo operations and regulatory compliance.
  • Demonstrated experience with refrigerated container operations (reefers), heavy lift and special stowage projects, and experience operating under diverse climatic and port conditions.
  • Prior involvement in company/flag audits, incident investigations, and successful oversight of vessel dry-docking and major repairs.
