Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead and manage all milking operations including milking schedules, parlor staffing, milking equipment operation and preventive maintenance to maintain efficient throughput and consistent milk yield while minimizing udder stress and mastitis risk.
  • Develop, implement and maintain herd health protocols in partnership with veterinarians, including vaccination schedules, disease testing, mastitis control programs, foot care, and emergency treatment plans to reduce morbidity and maximize productivity.
  • Monitor and optimize reproduction programs — oversee heat detection, synchronization, artificial insemination (AI) coordination, pregnancy diagnosis, and record reproductive performance metrics (calving intervals, conception rates, culling reasons).
  • Create and manage daily feeding and ration plans with nutritionists; supervise TMR preparation, feed inventories, forage management, and feed cost controls to deliver targeted lactation performance and body condition maintenance.
  • Oversee calf and heifer rearing programs from colostrum management through weaning and transition to the milking herd, ensuring low mortality, optimal growth targets, vaccination, and biosecurity for replacement animals.
  • Implement milk quality assurance measures including on-farm testing, somatic cell count (SCC) monitoring, bacterial counts, residue screening, and corrective actions to meet processor contracts and regulatory standards.
  • Supervise, coach and schedule farm staff — recruit, onboard and train milking crew, herd technicians, and maintenance workers; conduct performance reviews, enforce safety policies, and foster a team culture centered on animal welfare and productivity.
  • Maintain and analyze production and financial KPIs — track milk yield per cow, components (fat/protein), feed conversion, culling rates, veterinary costs, and labor efficiency; produce weekly and monthly reports to owners or senior management.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state and federal regulations impacting dairy operations including milk safety, animal welfare legislation, environmental permits, manure management, and workplace safety (OSHA).
  • Manage maintenance and capital planning for dairy infrastructure — evaluate and prioritize repairs for parlors, milk tanks, pipelines, pumps, barn ventilation, manure systems, and fencing; coordinate with mechanics and vendors for preventative maintenance.
  • Drive continuous improvement projects such as parlor workflow redesign, automation adoption (robotic milkers, sensors), waste reduction, energy efficiency or herd genetics improvement to increase profitability and sustainability.
  • Control operational budgets and purchasing — manage day-to-day farm expenditures, negotiate with suppliers for feed, veterinary services and equipment, and enforce inventory control for medicine and consumables.
  • Lead biosecurity programs and zoonotic disease prevention measures to limit pathogen introduction and cross-contamination between groups, contractors and transport vehicles.
  • Plan and execute seasonal workload management including milking schedule adjustments, grazing rotations, calving season readiness, and staffing peaks/troughs to maintain animal welfare and production targets.
  • Oversee milk handling and on-farm processing steps where applicable — milking hygiene, tank cooling, pasteurization (if on-site processing), recordkeeping and traceability to ensure chain-of-custody for milk shipments.
  • Coordinate transport logistics and supplier relations — schedule milk pick-ups with processors, manage tanker access, and ensure compliance with hauling requirements and milk pickup documentation.
  • Conduct root-cause analysis for production problems (e.g., sudden drops in yield, SCC spikes, reproductive failures) and implement corrective action plans using data-driven methods and cross-functional input.
  • Implement animal welfare and enrichment practices — provide appropriate bedding, ventilation, cooling systems, and humane handling procedures that support health and milk production.
  • Manage culling, sale and purchase decisions for animals in partnership with ownership and financial teams; optimize herd composition to meet production and genetic goals.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate herd records using herd management software (e.g., DairyComp, PC Dart, Afimilk) for treatments, breeding, milk testing, and regulatory documentation to support traceability and continuous improvement.
  • Provide on-call oversight and emergency response for critical events such as calving complications, equipment failures, extreme weather, or disease outbreaks, coordinating rapid corrective actions and communication with stakeholders.
  • Develop and implement training and SOP documentation for all routine and specialty tasks (milking protocol, medication administration, cleaning procedures) to standardize quality and safety across shifts.
  • Evaluate and implement animal nutrition and herd genetics programs to optimize long-term productivity and lifetime profitability of the herd.

Secondary Functions

  • Support farm-level sustainability initiatives including manure management, nutrient planning, water conservation and renewable energy projects to reduce environmental footprint.
  • Participate in cross-functional meetings with feed suppliers, veterinarians, processors and finance teams to align operational goals and contractual obligations.
  • Assist with recruiting campaigns and workforce development programs, providing mentorship for junior staff and coordinating on-farm training sessions.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
