Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Design and deliver age-appropriate, progressive dance curricula for beginner to advanced students in multiple dance styles (ballet, jazz, hip hop, contemporary, tap, ballroom), establishing clear learning objectives and measurable outcomes for each term or session.
  • Create detailed lesson plans that incorporate technical warm-ups, exercise progressions, choreography, cool-downs, conditioning and cross-training activities to improve strength, flexibility, alignment, and injury prevention.
  • Teach group classes and private lessons with differentiated instruction tailored to individual skill levels, learning styles, and goals while maintaining consistent pacing and classroom control.
  • Develop original choreography for recitals, competitions, community performances, and class showcases, translating artistic concepts into teachable steps and memorable staging.
  • Assess and document student progress through regular evaluations, verbal and written feedback, video review, and formal grading systems; update individualized development plans and communicate progress to students and parents.
  • Lead rehearsals efficiently, set clear expectations, manage stagecraft basics (entrances, exits, spacing), and coordinate costume, prop, and stage cue logistics for performance readiness.
  • Provide safe and supportive physical instruction that emphasizes correct technique, body alignment, spotting methods, injury prevention strategies and appropriate modifications for injuries or special needs.
  • Manage classroom logistics including setup of sound systems, playlists editing to match tempos, mirror and flooring checks, and ensuring equipment (bars, mats) is used and stored safely.
  • Maintain a professional studio environment by enforcing studio policies, attendance procedures, fee collection processes, and code of conduct for students, parents, and staff.
  • Build strong relationships with students, parents, and colleagues through timely communication, parent-teacher conferences, enrollment outreach, and transparent class policies to improve retention and satisfaction.
  • Plan, coordinate and execute seasonal recitals, showcases and workshops — including budgeting, scheduling, vendor coordination (costumes, lighting, venue), and marketing support to drive audience attendance.
  • Champion inclusive teaching practices and cultural sensitivity by adapting choreography and language to accommodate diverse backgrounds, body types, and abilities while fostering a respectful learning atmosphere.
  • Collaborate with other instructors, accompanists, and administrative staff to align curricula, share best practices, substitute teach when required, and support program-wide initiatives.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate attendance records, student waivers, progression logs, incident reports, and performance paperwork in compliance with studio policies and local regulations.
  • Recruit and onboard new students through open classes, trial lessons, school outreach, community events, and social media promotion; support enrollment growth through class retention strategies.
  • Deliver workshops, masterclasses and outreach programs for schools, community centers, and corporate partners to expand studio visibility and create additional revenue streams.
  • Use multimedia tools (video recording, online class platforms, virtual lesson delivery) to support remote instruction, provide supplemental rehearsal materials, and offer make-up class options.
  • Enforce child protection and safeguarding measures, including background checks where required, appropriate adult-to-child ratios, and adherence to policies for reporting concerns.
  • Administer basic first aid, recognize signs of overuse or acute injury, refer students to medical professionals when necessary, and adapt class plans following injuries.
  • Track industry trends in dance pedagogy, music selection, and performance styles; attend professional development, conventions, and teacher trainings to continuously refine teaching methods.
  • Create and manage class progression tracks, audition processes for company classes or competitive teams, and criteria for placement to ensure transparency and fairness.
  • Optimize lesson sequencing and music editing to support tempo progressions and ensure choreography is musically and pedagogically coherent.
  • Provide mentorship and coaching for assistant teachers and apprentices, offering lesson feedback, classroom observation notes, and professional development support.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist studio management with scheduling, marketing copy for class descriptions, social media content ideas, and photography/videography planning for promotional materials.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Additional certifications in dance pedagogy, child education, or fitness instruction (e.g., RAD, Vaganova, Cecchetti, ISTD, ACE).
