Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  1. Develop and implement comprehensive operational strategies for the data center, including capacity planning, equipment lifecycle management, cost control, energy optimisation and site growth.
  2. Oversee daily operations of the data center site(s) including power distribution systems, UPS, generators, HVAC, fire suppression systems, rack and network infrastructure to maintain high‑availability of services.
  3. Lead a team of technicians, engineers and support staff across shifts (including 24/7 operations), setting performance expectations, training and mentoring to ensure operational excellence.
  4. Manage vendor and contractor relationships for maintenance, installation, upgrades and support services; negotiate service level agreements (SLAs) and monitor vendor performance.
  5. Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and service metrics such as uptime, capacity utilisation, power usage effectiveness (PUE), incident response times and cost efficiency; generate and present regular reports to leadership.
  6. Design, maintain and regularly review standard operating procedures (SOPs), methods of procedure (MOPs), emergency operating procedures (EOPs) and ensure compliance across personnel and third‑party contractors.
  7. Drive continuous improvement initiatives: identify inefficiencies, recommend and implement infrastructure upgrades, automation, optimisation of cooling and power systems, and process refinements.
  8. Lead incident management, root cause analysis, post‑mortem reviews and crisis response for any unplanned outages or major infrastructure events, ensuring minimal downtime and business impact.
  9. Collaborate with IT operations, network engineers, security teams, facilities management and business stakeholders to align data center operations with organisational goals and technology roadmaps.
  10. Manage and forecast budgets (capital and operational expenditures) for the data center(s), including power, cooling, staffing, maintenance and expansion projects.
  11. Conduct regular facility, infrastructure and security audits to ensure compliance with internal policies, industry standards (e.g., ISO 27001, PCI‑DSS) and regulatory requirements.
  12. Supervise and review capacity planning for space, power, cooling and network connectivity, ensuring that the facility can support future growth, expansions and new site builds.
  13. Ensure physical security, environmental monitoring (temperature, humidity, air flow), access control, fire suppression and alarm systems are operating correctly and findings are addressed promptly.
  14. Coordinate equipment installation, decommissioning, relocation, cabling and inventory management of data center hardware and facilities components.
  15. Maintain accurate documentation of facility drawings, infrastructure layouts, power/cooling schematics, asset registers and service history; ensure system of records is updated.
  16. Serve as escalation point for on‑call issues, ensure shift hand‑overs are effective, and maintain high level of readiness for emergency response in 24/7 high‑availability environments.
  17. Oversee service management processes including incident/problem/change/capacity management to maintain operational integrity and service delivery standards.
  18. Engage with customers, internal stakeholders or tenants (in colocation or multi‑tenant environments) to understand their requirements, review service levels, conduct site tours and support business development efforts.
  19. Supervise infrastructure migration or expansion projects (e.g., new site build‑out, rack expansions, white‑space growth) ensuring schedule, budget and quality are met.
  20. Promote a culture of safety, sustainability, energy efficiency and data‑center best practices; ensure compliance with environmental, health and safety regulations.
  21. Lead recruitment, onboarding, performance reviews, team development and succession planning to build high‑performing operations teams.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad‑hoc operational reporting, data analysis of facility performance, capacity utilisation metrics and operational cost trends.
  • Contribute to the organisation’s data centre strategy and roadmap, helping to define future infrastructure investments and site portfolio plans.
  • Collaborate with business units to translate facility and infrastructure requirements into engineering deliverables or project objectives.
  • Participate in project steering, site planning, safety committees and shift/roster planning within the data centre operations team.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proven knowledge of data centre infrastructure systems including electrical power distribution, UPS, generators, cooling/HVAC, fire suppression and environmental controls.
  • Experience with data centre operations tools and facility management software (DCIM, monitoring, capacity planning).
  • Strong understanding of network infrastructure, server hardware, rack/cabling standards, and storage systems in a large‑scale data centre.
  • Competence in incident, problem and change management frameworks for 24/7 mission‑critical environments.
  • Budgeting and financial planning skills for operational and capital expenditure in data centre facilities.
  • Capacity planning and performance optimisation skills, including PUE, space/power forecasting, and efficiency metrics.
  • Knowledge of regulatory compliance and industry standards (ISO 27001, PCI‑DSS, health & safety, environmental).
  • Vendor management, contract negotiation and service level management expertise in a managed infrastructure environment.
  • Leadership of multi‑shift operations teams, strong operational oversight and escalation capability.
  • Ability to manage new build‑outs, expansions or migration projects, coordinating cross‑functional stakeholders, suppliers and contractors.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, Facilities Management or related technical or operations discipline.

Preferred Education:

  • Master’s degree or advanced certification in Data Center Management, Facility Operations, Business Administration or relevant field.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 5 to 8 years of progressive experience in data centre operations, facility management or mission‑critical infrastructure leadership.

  • 8+ years of experience managing multiple data centre sites or large scale facility infrastructure, with track record of team leadership, operational excellence and building or scaling data centre operations.
