Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct thorough client intake interviews, assess legal issues and defenses, advise clients on constitutional rights, potential outcomes and realistic strategies, and document all advice in client files.
  • Lead comprehensive factual and legal investigations by coordinating with private investigators, interviewing witnesses, subpoenaing records, reviewing police reports, bodycam and 911 footage, and collecting exculpatory evidence.

  • Draft, file, and argue pretrial motions (e.g., motions to suppress, motions to dismiss, discovery motions, bail motions) supported by detailed legal research and evidentiary analysis.
  • Prepare persuasive written pleadings and memoranda, including motions in limine, sentencing memoranda, post-conviction motions, and appellate briefs, ensuring adherence to court rules and deadlines.
  • Represent clients at initial appearances, arraignments, detention hearings, bail hearings, preliminary hearings, pretrial conferences, and all other court proceedings with professionalism and thorough preparation.
  • Manage all aspects of trial preparation: develop themes, prepare witness lists, prepare direct and cross-examinations, organize documentary and demonstrative evidence, and coordinate expert testimony.
  • Conduct jury selection (voir dire), exercise peremptory challenges and strikes for cause, and craft individualized jury strategies that align with the client’s defense theory.
  • Provide vigorous oral advocacy in courtroom settings by delivering opening statements, conducting witness examinations, making evidentiary objections, handling admissibility hearings, and delivering closing arguments.
  • Negotiate plea agreements and sentencing recommendations with prosecutors, evaluate offers against client objectives, and counsel clients thoroughly on risks and benefits before acceptance or rejection.
  • Prepare clients for testimony, manage client expectations, coach on courtroom demeanor, and maintain attorney-client privilege and confidentiality at all times.
  • Coordinate and oversee expert witnesses (forensic scientists, medical examiners, mental health professionals), draft expert witness subpoenas, and integrate expert opinions into case strategy.
  • Conduct complex legal research using primary and secondary sources, synthesize case law and statutory materials, and apply precedents to develop novel defense theories.
  • Supervise paralegals and junior attorneys, delegate tasks, review work product for quality and compliance, and provide mentorship and professional development.

  • Advise clients on collateral consequences of convictions, including immigration consequences, sex offender registration, employment impacts, financial penalties, and driver’s license suspensions.
  • Represent clients in sentencing hearings, present mitigating evidence, negotiate alternative sentencing or diversion programs, and make factual and legal arguments to minimize punitive outcomes.
  • Conduct appellate review, identify appealable issues, draft notices of appeal and appellate briefs, and argue before appellate courts or support appellate counsel with trial record preparation.
  • Ensure strict compliance with professional responsibility and local bar rules, report conflicts of interest, and maintain ethical standards in client communication, billing, and case handling.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with community resources, social service agencies, and diversion program coordinators to support client rehabilitation and alternative sentencing solutions.
  • Prepare and deliver pretrial motions and evidentiary hearings to challenge unlawful stops, searches and seizures, custodial interrogations, and other constitutional violations through well-supported legal argument.
  • Manage high caseloads efficiently, triage matters by priority and complexity, and escalate critical issues to senior counsel or stakeholders when necessary.
  • Track and analyze emerging legal trends, new case law, changes in criminal statutes, and prosecutor policies to update defense strategies and training materials.

Secondary Functions

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
