Primary Functions

  • Build and manage scalable geospatial data pipelines in Google Earth Engine, cloud environments (GCP, AWS), and local processing architectures to process terabytes of imagery for operational forest monitoring.
  • Create and tune machine learning and statistical models (supervised classification, random forests, gradient boosting, deep learning) to map land-cover classes, discriminate logging/clearance vs. natural disturbance, and reduce false positives in forest loss alerts.
  • Produce regular and ad-hoc forest loss alerts, hotspot maps, and near-real-time monitoring dashboards that deliver actionable intelligence to conservation teams, government agencies, and corporate stakeholders.
  • Design and execute robust accuracy assessment protocols, including creation of validation datasets, sample design, confusion matrix analysis, and uncertainty quantification for published forest change products.

  • Provide technical leadership on data ingestion and preprocessing workflows including cloud-optimized GeoTIFFs, image compositing, atmospheric correction, cloud/shadow masking, and topographic correction.
  • Conduct change attribution analysis to distinguish between drivers such as agricultural expansion, selective logging, mining, natural disturbance, and fire using multi-source remote sensing and temporal analytics.
  • Develop and deploy interactive data visualizations and web map applications (Leaflet, Mapbox, kepler.gl, Dash) for stakeholder engagement and public transparency of deforestation monitoring results.
  • Lead capacity-building initiatives, including training workshops and hands-on sessions for partners and government stakeholders on satellite image interpretation, Google Earth Engine scripts, and forest monitoring best practices.
  • Design monitoring frameworks aligned with international standards (REDD+, GFCR, UNFCCC, FAO) and help translate remote sensing outputs into carbon impact estimates and emissions reporting where applicable.
  • Coordinate field validation and ground-truth data collection campaigns, developing protocols for GPS data capture, plot sampling, and photographic documentation to validate remote sensing-derived change.
  • Manage project timelines, deliverables, budgets, and partner relationships for forest monitoring projects, ensuring on-time delivery of maps, alerts, and reports to funders and stakeholders.
  • Monitor and evaluate the performance of operational monitoring systems, implement iterative improvements, and maintain backlog prioritization for model and algorithm enhancements.
