  • Use handheld devices, mobile apps, or onboard tablets to receive route information, scan barcodes, capture proof of delivery (photo/signature), update statuses in real time, and report exceptions to dispatch.
  • Verify customer identity, collect signatures and payments when required (cash, card, contactless), process returns or failed-delivery documentation, and issue receipts using company-approved POS or mobile systems.
  • Plan and adjust routes proactively using GPS navigation, route-optimization tools, and local traffic knowledge to maximize on-time delivery and minimize fuel and time costs while adhering to company routing policies.
  • Inspect vehicle and cargo at the start and end of each shift; report mechanical issues, damage, or safety concerns through established channels and ensure basic vehicle cleanliness and readiness.
  • Load and secure packages inside the delivery vehicle to prevent damage in transit, accounting for fragile, hazardous, or temperature-sensitive items and following packaging and stacking guidelines.
  • Communicate proactively with customers regarding delivery windows, delays, special instructions, or missed deliveries via phone, SMS, or in-app messaging while maintaining professional and courteous tone.
  • Handle delivery exceptions by troubleshooting address problems, coordinating re-delivery or redirection with dispatch, and documenting reasons for exception for continuous improvement and billing reconciliation.
  • Meet or exceed operational KPIs including on-time percentage, first-attempt delivery rate, deliveries-per-hour, and customer satisfaction metrics through disciplined time management and route adherence.
  • Follow company and regulatory safety protocols (e.g., seat belt use, vehicle weight limits, proper lifting techniques, OSHA/DOT rules where applicable) to minimize accidents and ensure compliance with municipal transportation laws.
  • Support chain-of-custody procedures for high-value or controlled shipments by following required documentation, secure handling, and transfer protocols to maintain security and audit readiness.
  • Perform physical loading/unloading of packages, often lifting, carrying, and placing items up and down stairs, into lobbies or through gated access; use hand trucks, dollies, or pallet jacks as needed while following safe-lift practices.
  • Collect and process returned merchandise or refused deliveries, properly documenting condition, initiating reverse logistics workflows, and coordinating with inventory teams to ensure accurate stock reconciliation.
  • Participate in pre-shift briefings and post-shift debriefs with dispatch and operations leads to review routes, hazards, policy updates, and daily performance feedback.
  • Maintain accurate delivery logs, fuel receipts, tolls, mileage records, and cash collection records according to company procedures to support payroll, reimbursement, and audit activities.
  • Identify patterns and recurring issues in routing, customer access, or address accuracy and propose practical improvements to route planning, mapping data, and customer instructions to reduce delays and failed attempts.
  • Provide excellent customer service at delivery locations by representing the brand professionally, responding calmly to complaints, escalating complex issues to supervisors, and capturing feedback for operational improvement.
  • Adhere to temperature control requirements for perishable deliveries by monitoring cooling units, using insulated containers, and completing temperature logs when transporting food or medical supplies.
  • Assist with ad hoc operational tasks such as inventory counts, unloads during peak periods, cross-dock support, and temporary warehouse duties to maintain service continuity during high volume.
  • Enforce security procedures when handling signature-required or age-restricted deliveries, asking for valid ID, verifying compliance, and denying release when policies are not met while documenting the incident.
  • Participate in training sessions on equipment, customer service standards, new technology rollout, and regulatory compliance to stay current with evolving operational requirements.
  • Escalate safety incidents, customer disputes, or alleged package damage to management immediately, completing required incident reports and supporting investigations with factual, time-stamped information.
  • Support special projects such as promotional deliveries, scheduled large-item installations, and coordinated multi-stop routes for events and B2B customers, following project plans and checklists precisely.
  • Maintain professional appearance and behavior consistent with company standards while working in public-facing environments and building positive relationships with customers, building staff, and property managers.

Secondary Functions

  • Contribute real-world feedback to route-planning teams and operations analysts to help refine algorithms, address mapping inaccuracies, and reduce delivery friction points.
  • Assist in basic inventory reconciliation and minor warehousing tasks when workload fluctuations require cross-functional support between delivery and distribution centers.
  • Support customer experience initiatives by collecting and reporting qualitative feedback from recipients to inform training, product, or service improvements.
  • Participate in pilot programs for new hardware or software (delivery apps, handheld devices, telematics) and provide actionable feedback on usability and operational impact.
  • Help maintain environmental and sustainability goals by reporting opportunities to optimize fuel usage, reduce idle time, and consolidate stops for emission reduction.
