Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Assist the primary driver by systematically loading packages, cartons, and freight into the delivery vehicle in a safe, damage-aware, and route-efficient order to minimize handling and expedite drop-off times.
  • Unload and carry packages from vehicle to customer doorways, porches, or designated delivery zones, applying correct lifting techniques and using hand trucks, dollies, or lift gates as required to prevent product damage and personal injury.
  • Scan, sort, and document each shipment with company-provided handheld scanners or mobile apps, ensuring accuracy of barcodes, tracking numbers, and delivery confirmations in real time to support traceability and customer notifications.
  • Verify recipient names, delivery addresses, package counts, and special handling instructions at each stop, obtain signatures or photo proof of delivery as required, and escalate discrepancies to the driver or dispatch immediately.
  • Support safe and efficient routing by assisting the driver with GPS navigation, reading maps and route sheets, monitoring traffic alerts, and suggesting quicker access points or alternate stops based on local knowledge.
  • Secure cargo inside the vehicle using straps, braces, and partitions to prevent shifting while driving and to maintain product integrity during rough roads or abrupt stops.
  • Provide professional, courteous customer service at each delivery interaction by answering basic delivery-related questions, leaving messages or notices when customers are unavailable, and representing the company brand with consistent professionalism.
  • Operate delivery vehicle lift gates, ramps, and powered loading equipment safely following manufacturer guidelines and company procedures to lift heavy items and maintain loading efficiency.
  • Comply with all company safety policies and DOT or local transportation regulations, wearing required PPE, following vehicle weight limits, and participating in pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections to report mechanical concerns.
  • Collect payments, COD amounts, or returns when required, process receipts or electronic payments securely, and ensure proper handing-off of cash, checks, or company-issued documentation following cash handling policies.
  • Perform basic vehicle care tasks such as checking oil, coolant, tire pressure, and fuel levels; keep driver and cargo areas clean, organized, and free of hazards to support efficient operations and safety.
  • Assist with same-day or priority deliveries by reorganizing load manifests and reprioritizing stops in coordination with driver and dispatch to meet time-sensitive commitments.
  • Communicate proactively with dispatch and customer service via radio, phone, or app to report delays, missed deliveries, damaged goods, or route changes and to receive reassignment instructions in dynamic delivery environments.
  • Identify and document damaged or missing items at pickup and delivery points, prepare reports or damage claims with photographs and detailed notes, and follow company protocols to minimize customer impact.
  • Help stage, label, and consolidate pallets or palletized shipments for efficient stop sequencing during morning load or mid-route adjustments, coordinating with warehouse personnel when necessary.
  • Support high-volume periods (holidays, promotions, peak seasons) by working extended shifts or split shifts, maintaining productivity targets while adhering to safety and customer service standards.
  • Assist with inbound and outbound loading activities at the distribution center when route schedules allow, including staging packages in route order and clearing loading docks for efficient turnover.
  • Train and mentor new delivery helpers on safe lifting, scanning procedures, customer interaction standards, and route etiquette to maintain consistent team performance and reduce onboarding time.
  • Follow chain-of-custody procedures for age-restricted, sensitive, or high-value items, verifying IDs, obtaining proper signatures, and locking or segregating cargo as required until final delivery.
  • Maintain accurate daily logs of mileage, stops completed, fuel usage, and timesheets to support payroll, route analytics, and operational planning.
