Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Produce fully-detailed 2D drawings and parametric 3D models (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inventor, Revit) from conceptual sketches, engineering notes, and field measurements that are suitable for fabrication, assembly, and construction.
- Develop and deliver complete shop drawings and fabrication packages, including dimensions, tolerances, material callouts, weld symbols, surface finish notes, and bill of materials (BOM) to support manufacturing and procurement.
- Interpret engineering specifications, reference standards, structural/architectural notes, and client requirements to ensure drawings comply with industry codes (ANSI, ASME Y14.5 GD&T, ISO) and project quality standards.
- Create piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) and piping isometrics for HVAC, plumbing, and process systems, including specifying fittings, flange ratings, and routing clearances.
- Apply geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) to critical components and assemblies to ensure proper fit, function, and manufacturability across multi-part assemblies.
- Produce and maintain as-built drawings and redline markups following site verification and field changes; reconcile discrepancies between design documents and constructed conditions.
- Prepare and manage drawing revisions, release notes, title blocks, revision clouds, and drawing revision histories in accordance with company CAD management procedures or PDM/PLM systems.
- Coordinate with engineers, architects, project managers, fabricators, and subcontractors to resolve design issues, incorporate RFIs and change orders, and update drawings to reflect approved changes.
- Generate nested flat patterns and sheet metal development drawings, including bend allowances and K-factors, ready for CNC plasma, laser, or brake forming operations.
- Perform clash detection and coordination in BIM environments (Revit, Navisworks) to identify and resolve interferences between structural, MEP, and architectural systems early in the design process.
- Prepare assembly drawings with exploded views, fastener lists, torque specifications and assembly instructions to support shop assembly and field installation teams.
- Create and maintain standardized CAD templates, layer standards, symbol libraries, and drawing blocks to improve consistency, reduce errors and accelerate project delivery.
- Convert legacy paper drawings or PDF mark-ups into accurate DWG/DXF files and structured CAD models while preserving design intent and version control.
- Support procurement and sourcing by producing detailed vendor drawings, component specifications, and annotated BOMs that enable accurate quoting and lead-time estimation.
- Validate manufacturability and constructability by reviewing designs for tolerances, clearances, welding access, and serviceability; recommend design modifications to reduce cost and simplify fabrication.
- Prepare technical drawings and drawings packages for submission to clients, permitting authorities, and certification bodies, ensuring compliance with contract documents and regulatory requirements.
- Support quality assurance / quality control (QA/QC) by performing drawing reviews, checking dimensions, verifying material callouts, and ensuring documentation completeness prior to release.
- Produce illustrative presentation renderings, section cuts, and detailed profiles to clarify complex assemblies for stakeholders and to support marketing or bid submissions.
- Maintain accurate CAD file management, including folder structures, naming conventions, backups, and archiving of project deliverables in company-approved repositories.
- Respond to shop-floor and field fabrication questions in real time, issuing quick-update sketches, detail clarifications, and work-around drawings to avoid production delays.
- Create prefabrication and modularization drawings for off-site assembly, including transport, lifting points, weld schedules, and assembly jigs to facilitate safe and efficient installation.
- Implement continuous improvement suggestions for drafting workflows, toolsets, and standards; pilot new CAD/BIM tools, plugins, and productivity macros to increase throughput.
- Provide support during site surveys and field verification visits, capturing accurate measurements and photographic documentation to update drawings and models.
Secondary Functions
- Mentor and provide hands-on training to junior drafters and interns on CAD best practices, drawing standards, and company workflows.
- Assist project managers with scheduling deliverables, estimating drafting hours, and tracking progress against milestones.
- Maintain and organize a centralized library of standard details, parts, and reusable CAD assets to reduce duplication of effort across projects.
- Participate in multidisciplinary design reviews and project coordination meetings to proactively identify issues and reduce change orders.
- Assist procurement and planning teams by updating BOMs and delivering engineered drawings needed for material long-lead purchases.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives by documenting recurring drafting issues, recommending process changes, and helping implement CAD standard updates.
