Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Plan, design, and lead generative research (ethnography, contextual inquiry, diary studies) to uncover unmet user needs, behavior patterns, mental models, and product opportunities across target audiences.
  • Design and execute evaluative research (moderated and unmoderated usability testing, A/B tests, prototype testing) to validate product concepts, flows, and interaction models before and after launch.
  • Develop detailed research plans with hypotheses, recruitment criteria, sample sizes, study scripts, success criteria, and timelines to align research with product goals and stakeholder priorities.
  • Recruit and screen participants (remote and in-person), manage vendor relationships, and ensure representative sampling for inclusive and accessible research outcomes.
  • Conduct in-depth user interviews and focus groups to capture qualitative insights around motivations, pain points, workflows, and context of use.
  • Plan and analyze quantitative research (surveys, analytics segmentation, quantitative usability metrics) to triangulate findings and measure impact.
  • Synthesize qualitative and quantitative data into clear, actionable insights: personas, journey maps, experience maps, behavior models, and decision frameworks for product teams.
  • Create research deliverables—reports, slide decks, one-pagers, and executive summaries—that translate evidence into prioritized recommendations and design requirements.
  • Partner with product managers and designers to turn research insights into validated prototypes, feature requirements, and product roadmaps that address user needs and business objectives.
  • Facilitate cross-functional workshops (affinity mapping, co-creation, design critiques, synthesis sessions) to translate research outputs into design direction and stakeholder alignment.
  • Advocate for the user perspective in planning and prioritization meetings; surface user risks, unintended consequences, and opportunity areas to inform strategic decisions.
  • Define research success metrics and evaluate the impact of design changes through pre/post-study comparisons, analytics instrumentation, and longitudinal studies.
  • Maintain and curate research repositories (knowledge base) and research ops processes so insights are searchable, reusable, and discoverable by product teams.
  • Conduct accessibility research and testing with diverse users, including people with disabilities, to validate inclusive design decisions and meet accessibility standards (WCAG).
  • Mentor and coach junior researchers, designers, and cross-functional partners on research methods, synthesis techniques, and evidence-based decision making.

  • Use prototyping tools (Figma, Sketch, InVision, Framer) to create interactive test artifacts and validate design hypotheses rapidly.
  • Present research findings to executives and stakeholders, tailoring narrative and evidence to different audiences to drive buy-in and action.

Secondary Functions

  • Build and maintain participant panels and vendor lists for ongoing recruitment and longitudinal research.
  • Support product analytics by defining event taxonomy and advising on instrumentation to capture key UX metrics.
  • Contribute to the organization's research strategy and roadmap, helping prioritize long-term inquiries and strategic studies.
  • Create templates, playbooks, and libraries for rapid study execution and consistent reporting across product teams.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Psychology, Anthropology, Sociology, Design, Human Factors, or a related field.

Preferred Education:

  • Master's degree or equivalent experience in HCI, Cognitive Psychology, Anthropology, Human Factors, or Design Research.
