  • Maintain and update bills of materials (BOMs), part lists, and assembly drawings in the PLM/ERP system, ensuring accuracy of part numbers, revisions, suppliers, and purchasing information for production readiness.
  • Apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to drawings and models to communicate functional requirements, tolerance stacks, and inspection criteria that support manufacturing and quality control.
  • Work directly with design engineers to translate product requirements into manufacturable designs, propose design improvements for cost, manufacturability, and performance, and document design rationale and change history.
  • Prepare and release controlled drawing packages and engineering change notices (ECNs) according to established revision control procedures and ISO/AS standards, coordinating with production and purchasing as needed.
  • Generate CNC-ready files, CAM toolpaths, and basic machining setup documentation or collaborate with CAM programmers to ensure parts are producible to specification on available equipment.
  • Produce detailed assembly instructions, exploded views, and installation diagrams to support production, assembly teams, and field service technicians, reducing assembly time and errors.
  • Conduct tolerance analysis and tolerance stack-up studies to verify interchangeability and fit of mating parts; recommend tolerance relaxation or design changes to optimize cost versus performance.
  • Support prototype builds by creating temporary fixtures, jigs, and tooling drawings, and by working with the shop floor to iterate designs during hands-on testing and evaluation.
  • Collaborate with suppliers and contract manufacturers by providing technical drawings, clarifying specifications, reviewing supplier drawings, and resolving issues that impact lead time or quality.
  • Perform regular drawing audits and standardization activities to ensure drawing templates, title blocks, and drafting conventions are consistent across product lines and conform to CAD standards.
  • Assist in root cause analysis when manufacturing or field issues arise by reviewing designs, parsing failure reports, and proposing corrective design actions and documentation updates.
  • Convert legacy paper drawings and hand sketches into modern CAD models and electronic drawing packages while preserving critical tolerances and functional intent.
  • Support DFMEA and design review meetings by preparing CAD visuals, BOM summaries, and suggested risk mitigations tied to manufacturability and assembly processes.
  • Create and maintain product family libraries, standard components, and reusable CAD templates to accelerate new product development and ensure design consistency.
  • Perform basic engineering calculations related to materials, clearances, fastener loadings, and part strength to validate design assumptions under the direction of engineers.
  • Produce visual aids, BOM exploded views, and photorealistic renders to support proposals, manufacturing work instructions, and marketing collateral as required.
  • Ensure CAD models and drawings meet regulatory and industry-specific requirements (e.g., UL, CE, ISO 9001) and support documentation needed for compliance and certification efforts.
  • Train and mentor junior CAD staff or shop personnel on drawing interpretation, CAD best practices, and company drafting standards to improve team competency and throughput.
  • Participate in continuous improvement projects focused on reducing cycle time, improving documentation quality, and standardizing design practices across engineering and production functions.
  • Coordinate with quality inspection teams to create inspection drawings, measurement plans, and first-article inspection documentation that align with shop capabilities and gage lists.
  • Troubleshoot issues with CAD data integrity, file transfer, and PLM/ERP integration; liaise with IT or CAD administrators to resolve data management problems quickly.

Secondary Functions

  • Support cross-functional teams during product launches by supplying last-minute drawing updates, packaging dimensions, and assembly clarifications to meet launch timelines.
  • Assist in vendor quotes and manufacturability reviews by preparing sample drawings, estimates of critical tolerances, and suggestions for alternate materials or processes.
  • Maintain spare parts drawings and update service documentation for after-sales support and customer service teams.
  • Participate in shop-floor observations and kaizen events to capture real-world feedback and translate it into drawing/assembly improvements.
  • Support procurement by verifying supplier documentation, vendor-supplied CAD models, and certificate of conformance (CoC) data for critical components.
  • Help maintain the CAD library, naming conventions, and folder structure to improve searchability, reduce duplication, and ensure long-term data integrity.
