Primary Functions
- Perform comprehensive diagnostic ultrasound examinations (abdominal, pelvic, obstetric, vascular Doppler, small parts, musculoskeletal) using appropriate transducers and imaging protocols, ensuring optimal image quality for physician interpretation.
- Utilize Doppler techniques including spectral and color flow to evaluate vascular flow abnormalities, stenosis, thrombosis and hemodynamics; document velocities and waveform analysis according to lab protocols.
- Conduct obstetric and gynecologic sonograms including dating, growth assessment, fetal anatomy surveys, placenta evaluation and biophysical profiles; accurately measure fetal biometrics and calculate gestational age.
- Acquire sonographic images for abdominal organs (liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, kidneys) and generate measurements, documenting sonographic findings and technical limitations.
- Perform specialized exams such as renal Dopplers, thyroid and scrotal sonography, breast ultrasound, and interventional ultrasound assistance (needle guidance) as required.
- Prepare patients for procedures by obtaining medical histories, explaining the exam process, assessing contraindications, and ensuring informed consent and comfort.
- Maintain ALARA principles (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) in all imaging to minimize patient exposure and optimize ultrasound settings.
- Enter detailed exam documentation, preliminary impressions, and measurements in the electronic medical record (EMR)/PACS and ensure images and reports are properly labeled and archived.
- Communicate clinically significant or critical findings promptly to the supervising radiologist or ordering physician in accordance with escalation protocols.
- Assist physicians with ultrasound-guided procedures (biopsies, aspirations, injections, drainages), providing sterile technique support, transducer guidance and image documentation.
- Perform equipment checks, routine calibration, quality assurance testing and preventive maintenance coordination to ensure uninterrupted service and image integrity.
- Participate in QA/QI initiatives: peer review, protocol standardization, image quality audits and workflow improvements to maintain accreditation and clinical excellence.
- Adhere to HIPAA, OSHA and local infection control policies when handling patient data, conducting exams and managing linens/supplies.
- Triage and prioritize exam requests based on clinical urgency, patient condition and resource availability, managing multiple patients while maintaining high standards of care.
- Provide patient education regarding preparation, procedure expectations and follow-up instructions; document patient teaching and responses.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (radiologists, obstetricians, vascular surgeons, ER clinicians, nurses, schedulers) to coordinate imaging services and improve diagnostic pathways.
- Participate in on-call rotation and respond to emergent bedside or intraoperative ultrasound requests, including trauma and point-of-care imaging under appropriate supervision.
- Maintain accurate supply inventories for ultrasound probes, disposables and sterile trays; order or requisition supplies per department policy.
- Mentor and precept students and new staff, providing structured feedback, skills coaching and competency assessments aligned with departmental objectives.
- Follow established exam protocols but exercise independent judgment to extend or modify exams when unexpected pathology is encountered, documenting rationale and additional images obtained.
- Ensure accurate coding and documentation to support billing and reimbursement (CPT/ICD awareness), collaborating with coding/billing teams to resolve discrepancies.
- Participate in continuing education (CE) activities to maintain professional credentials (ARDMS, RDMS, RVT, RDCS or equivalent) and stay current with evolving imaging techniques and technologies.
