Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Set up, calibrate and operate flatbed, rotary and platen die cutting presses and ancillary equipment (feeders, stackers, matrix strippers, conveyors) according to job tickets and engineering drawings to achieve specified tolerances and part quality.
  • Read and interpret dielines, blueprints, cut files, job specifications and customer samples to determine tooling, press settings (pressure, speed, and register) and handling requirements before production start-up.
  • Mount and secure steel rule dies, rotary tooling, cutting knives, creasing rules and stripping dies, ensuring proper die alignment, crank and anvil adjustments, and cutting clearance to eliminate ragged cuts, crushed corners and material distortion.
  • Perform pre-production trial runs, verify first-article parts against quality standards and customer specifications, record measurements (cut depth, burr, registration) and obtain sign-off before full production.
  • Execute rapid changeovers between jobs: remove/install dies, change knife and anvil plates, load and align sheets, and adjust guides and suction/feed settings to minimize downtime and maintain schedule adherence.
  • Monitor machine performance during runs; adjust speed, pressure, and lateral/longitudinal register to maintain consistent cut quality and accurate die placement over long runs.
  • Inspect finished parts and assemblies using calipers, templates, gauges and visual inspection for defects such as miscuts, delamination, excessive burr, incomplete cuts, or improper creasing, and take corrective action immediately.
  • Maintain production documentation including job logs, setup sheets, scrap records, downtime entries and preventive maintenance checklists in accordance with company and ISO/quality management standards.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical problems (misfeeds, jam-ups, hydraulic/pneumatic issues, wear on knives/dies) and perform first-line corrective maintenance; escalate complex issues to maintenance or engineering with detailed fault reports.
  • Sharpen, dress and maintain cutting knives, rules and anvils or coordinate with tooling shop for rework; inspect die integrity for broken rules, delamination or containment issues and request repairs as necessary.
  • Optimize material yield and nesting patterns to reduce waste, control scrap rate, and improve cost-per-part through best practices in nest layout and machine setting.
  • Maintain strict adherence to safety protocols: lockout/tagout (LOTO), guard integrity, PPE use, material handling safe practices and housekeeping requirements to prevent accidents and maintain a safe work environment.
  • Coordinate with production planners and supervisors to sequence jobs, prioritize urgent orders and balance workload to meet on-time delivery targets and minimize setup frequency.
  • Train and mentor junior operators and cross-train team members on setup, operation, quality expectations and safety practices; maintain skill matrices and cross-functional competencies.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance tasks: clean presses, lubricate moving parts, check hydraulic/pneumatic systems, inspect belts and bearings, and report parts needing replacement to reduce unplanned downtime.
  • Apply and sustain 5S, Kaizen and lean manufacturing principles at the press area, participating in continuous improvement events to increase throughput and reduce lead times.
  • Manage consumables inventory (blades, adhesives, anilox rollers, die pins, gaskets) and place reorder requests; verify correct stock for scheduled jobs to avoid production delays.
  • Execute specialized cutting techniques: kiss-cut for label stock, perforating, scoring/creasing, micro-embossing, laminated substrate handling and multi-up cutting sequences while preserving substrate integrity.
  • Coordinate with Quality Assurance to support root-cause analysis for recurring defects, implement corrective action plans and update control plans and SOPs accordingly.
  • Ensure accurate labeling, stacking and packaging of finished parts per customer requirements, including nesting sequence, lot identification and traceability markers for downstream operations.
  • Operate digital die cutting systems and software (cut path adjustments, registration marks, RIP files) when applicable, bridging traditional tooling knowledge with digital finishing technologies.
  • Perform matrix stripping and waste removal of cut parts, ensuring cylinders/table plates are clean to prevent rework or contamination of subsequent jobs.
  • Maintain clear communication with press checks, bindery and shipping to align on lead times, packaging requirements and shipping documentation for customer orders.
  • Record and report KPIs such as scrap rate, downtime minutes, throughput (sheets/hour) and first-pass yield to supervisors and participate in daily production stand-ups.

Secondary Functions

  • Support tooling development and collaboration with the die making shop to improve die designs for manufacturability and reduced setup time.
  • Assist in pilot runs, new product introductions and sample production for customer approvals and process validation.
  • Participate in safety audits, incident investigations and corrective action closure to strengthen the site safety culture.
  • Input job setup data, production counts and defect codes into the Manufacturing Execution System (MES) or ERP as required.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement projects such as setup reduction (SMED), quality improvement and cost savings initiatives.
  • Provide feedback to engineering or design teams about dieline or substrate issues affecting manufacturability.
  • Support training documentation updates, SOP revisions and standard work sheets to reflect best practices and lessons learned.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Operation and setup of flatbed, rotary, and platen die cutting presses (e.g., Bobst, Heidelberg, Kama, Rotocut, Stamperia) and related finishing equipment.
  • Mechanical setup: mounting and aligning steel rule dies, securing fasteners, setting cutting clearance and adjusting anvils and beds.
  • Proficiency reading and interpreting dielines, blueprints, CAD/PDF cut files, job tickets and spec sheets.
  • Measurement and inspection skills using vernier calipers, micrometers, depth gauges, templates and go/no-go gauges.
  • Hands-on troubleshooting of mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems; basic understanding of press drive systems and electrical interlocks.

  • Knowledge of materials: corrugated board, chipboard, paperboard, coated stocks, plastics, foams and adhesives and how they react under cutting/creasing.
  • Use of digital finishing software, RIP systems or computerized press controls for registration correction and cut path adjustments.
  • Preventive maintenance and basic machine repair skills, including changing bearings, belts, blades and seals.
  • Familiarity with quality systems (ISO, SQF), SPC basics and recording production metrics in MES/ERP systems.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED with basic technical/shop coursework.

  • Certifications in press operation, die maintenance, or safety (e.g., OSHA 10/30, forklift).
