Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Translate storyboards, animatics, and creative briefs into polished 2D or 3D animation sequences, ensuring accurate timing, fluid motion, and clear storytelling that aligns with client or creative direction.
  • Create character animations with emotional nuance and believable weight, acting, and personality for films, advertising spots, game cinematics, and episodic content, using industry-standard rigs and custom controls.
  • Design and animate motion graphics, title sequences, and kinetic typography for broadcast, social, and web platforms, optimizing for brand guidelines and platform-specific aspect ratios and codecs.
  • Build, refine, and maintain production-ready character rigs and deformation systems (facial rigs, skeletal rigs, blendshapes), collaborating with rigging and modeling teams to ensure animator-friendly controls.
  • Collaborate with art directors, producers, and VFX leads to scope shots, estimate timelines, and propose creative solutions that balance visual quality with delivery constraints and budget.
  • Composite rendered layers, passes, and effects into final shots using Nuke or After Effects, managing color, grain, motion blur, and camera integration to achieve seamless integration with live-action or CG elements.
  • Optimize scenes and assets for real-time engines (Unity, Unreal Engine) when producing interactive content or game-ready animations, including retargeting, root motion setup, and export optimization.
  • Iterate on animation through multiple review passes, responding to director and client feedback quickly and constructively while maintaining creative intent and technical integrity.
  • Produce clean animation cycles, loops, and game-ready FK/IK transitions that adhere to technical specifications and engine constraints for character controllers and gameplay systems.
  • Create and maintain animation libraries and reusable asset bundles (walk cycles, facial expressions, transition clips), organizing files and naming conventions to support efficient team workflows.
  • Collaborate with modeling, texturing, lighting, and rendering departments to ensure character meshes, UVs, and material setups deform and shade correctly under animation and motion.
  • Implement particle-based and procedural effects (cloth simulation, hair, secondary dynamics) to enhance animation realism, coordinating with simulation artists to bake and integrate final caches into shots.
  • Lead motion studies and reference-gathering sessions, shooting and analyzing video reference and rotoscope where necessary to capture accurate timing, weight, and nuance for complex performances.
  • Coach junior animators and interns by providing clear feedback, actionable notes, and hands-on demonstrations of animation principles, timing, and pipeline tools to elevate team output.
  • Maintain high standards for shot delivery—file organization, versioning, render settings, and handoff documentation—ensuring smooth transitions between departments and minimal rework.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues related to rigging, constraints, deformation artifacts, and render errors; propose and implement fixes or workarounds to meet deadlines.
  • Integrate audio cues, lip sync and dialogue timing into animated performances, ensuring mouth shapes and performance match recorded voiceover or ADR tracks.
  • Work within cross-functional sprints or production schedules, prioritizing shots and communicating progress proactively to producers and supervisors to mitigate risks and hit milestones.
  • Design and execute stylized animation treatments for campaigns and branded content, translating brand voice into motion language that scales across assets and platforms.
  • Optimize render pipelines and scene complexity to meet delivery deadlines and budgetary constraints, including batching renders, using network rendering, and adjusting sampling or lighting strategies.
  • Produce animatics and previsualization (previs) sequences to test camera moves, blocking, and pacing before full animation investment, helping stakeholders approve direction early.
  • Implement and adhere to version control systems, naming conventions, and asset management policies (Shotgun, Perforce, Git LFS), ensuring reproducibility and traceability across complex productions.
  • Keep up-to-date with emerging animation techniques, tools, and industry standards (real-time rendering, AI-assisted workflows) and propose process improvements that increase throughput and creative quality.

Secondary Functions

  • Support creative development by contributing concept sketches, turnaround sheets, and styleframes that communicate animation direction before production.
  • Assist in preparing showreel-ready output and portfolio assets by curating and polishing completed work for internal and external review.
  • Participate in cross-department post-mortems and retrospectives to document lessons learned and update best-practice guides for the animation pipeline.
  • Provide ad-hoc technical documentation and step-by-step guides for common rigging, export, and compositing tasks to reduce onboarding time for new team members.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficient 2D and 3D animation techniques: keyframing, spline polishing, timing, spacing, and secondary motion across both character and mechanical animation.
  • Expert-level experience with Adobe After Effects for compositing, motion graphics, and post-production workflows.
  • Strong command of Autodesk Maya for character animation, rigging integration, scene layout, and animation curves editing.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Animation, Motion Graphics, Computer Animation, Game Art, or Visual Effects from an accredited institution with industry-relevant coursework.
