Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Create high-resolution matte paintings, environment concepts, and hero assets from brief or rough 3D/2D references, delivering polished, production-ready artwork that matches the art director’s vision and project style guides.
- Paint and author tileable and non-tileable texture maps (albedo/diffuse, roughness, metallic, normal, height) that are optimized for game engines and meet technical requirements such as resolution, tiling, and memory budgets.
- Develop photorealistic and stylized environment paintings, backdrops, and matte elements for film plates and cinematic sequences, including integration-ready layers for compositors and VFX pipelines.
- Produce detailed character portraits, fabric and material studies, and prop paintings with correct lighting, perspective, and anatomical structure for use in cinematics, marketing, or in-game hero art.
- Interpret concept briefs and moodboards to create multiple creative iterations and variations, present options to art directors, and iterate quickly based on feedback during reviews and dailies.
- Paint color scripts, lighting keys, and compositional thumbnails to establish scene mood, time-of-day, and cinematic flow, collaborating with lighting teams and cinematographers to achieve cohesive visuals.
- Create photobashes and digital collages as part of a non-destructive painting workflow, combining photographic sources with hand-painted detail to achieve quick turnaround and high visual fidelity.
- Collaborate with 3D artists to paint projected textures, camera-projected matte paintings, and texture atlases for set extensions, environment dressing, and cinematic backgrounds.
- Optimize painted assets for real-time performance by creating mip-maps, LOD-friendly texture sets, and efficient UV layouts while preserving visual quality across platforms.
- Hand-paint trim sheets, decals, icons, and UI/UX art when required, producing crisp, readable 2D art that meshes with 3D environments and HUD elements.
- Maintain and evolve a reusable material and texture library, documenting naming conventions, layer structure, and PSD organization to ensure consistency across the art team and pipeline.
- Create and maintain layer-based PSDs with well-documented, non-destructive workflows (adjustment layers, masks, smart objects) to enable easy handoff and future edits.
- Work closely with art directors, environment artists, and VFX supervisors during sprint planning and production milestones to estimate tasks, scope time, and meet deliverables on schedule.
- Prepare print-ready and high-resolution marketing assets (key art, posters, splash images) and adapt game assets for trailers, store pages, and promotional campaigns.
- Troubleshoot and adapt painted assets for multiple output formats (HDR, ACES, sRGB, linear workflows) and ensure color fidelity across pipelines and monitors.
- Paint photorealistic and stylized skies, cityscapes, landscapes, and set extensions for integration into live-action plates or virtual production stages, adhering to camera lens and perspective requirements.
- Participate in art reviews, provide constructive critique to peers, and mentor junior painters by demonstrating advanced painting techniques, color workflows, and Photoshop/Procreate tricks.
- Create technical breakdowns and documentation for painted assets, outlining texture sets, maps, naming conventions, and integration instructions for engine or compositing teams.
- Maintain version control discipline for PSDs and texture sets (Perforce, Git LFS, or studio asset managers), ensuring recoverable history and consistent naming for collaborative pipelines.
- Implement feedback from QA and performance teams to reduce visual artifacts, pop-in, or tiling issues, and retune textures for device/console performance constraints.
- Produce “hero” asset turnarounds, paint 3, 4, and 6-view orthographic/color studies for prop and character presentation, and prepare art for sculptors and texture artists to reference.
- Support cross-disciplinary tasks such as previsualization painting, concept-to-production translation, and providing painted references for set builders or modelers in game/film production.
Secondary Functions
- Maintain asset catalogs and searchable texture/material libraries with metadata tagging (style, resolution, usage) to speed production and reuse.
- Assist in QA checks of color, scale, and tileability for painted maps before submission into the engine or compositor.
- Contribute to style guides, painting bibles, and onboarding materials to align new hires with studio painting standards and best practices.
- Liaise with marketing, publishing, and community teams to deliver artwork for social channels, store pages, and press kits on deadline.
- Participate in cross-functional sprint retrospectives to improve painting workflows, toolsets, and pipeline integration.
- Provide ad-hoc support for concept ideation sessions, rough blocking of environment layouts, and visual development workshops.
- Help research and test new painting tools, plugins, and brushes to keep the painting pipeline current and efficient.
- Archive completed projects with annotated PSDs, source materials, and workflow notes for future reference and asset reuse.
