Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Set up, operate, and monitor digital printing presses (e.g., HP Indigo, Xerox iGen, Canon varioPRINT, Konica Minolta Accurio) to produce high-quality print runs according to job tickets, specifications, and customer proofs.
- Prepare digital files for production by checking and correcting PDFs, applying trap and bleed, verifying fonts, ensuring correct resolution, and converting color profiles for accurate output.
- Calibrate color using spectrophotometers and color management software to maintain consistent CMYK and spot color reproduction across batches and multiple presses.
- Load and manage substrates (coated/uncoated stocks, synthetics, labels, envelopes) including measurement, handling, and feeding adjustments to ensure registration and reduce waste.
- Use RIP (Raster Image Processor) software to rasterize, queue, impose, and optimize jobs, adjusting screening, halftone, and ink limits to meet print requirements.
- Perform press make-ready tasks: press profiling, plate/toner/ink adjustments, paper profiling, and first-article inspection to validate run parameters before full production.
- Execute routine maintenance and preventive care (cleaning heads, rollers, feeds, fusers, printheads, filters) to maintain uptime and prolong equipment life.
- Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and software issues on digital presses; escalate complex problems to maintenance or vendor service while documenting root-cause actions.
- Monitor press run metrics (ppm, yield, downtime) and maintain accurate production logs and job reports for shift turnovers and management review.
- Conduct detailed visual and instrument-based quality inspections (density, dot gain, registration, banding, streaks, color shifts) during and after production.
- Adjust press settings in real time to correct color drift, registration errors, banding, streaking, and substrate feed irregularities to minimize scrap and rework.
- Coordinate with prepress, design, and customer service teams to clarify print specifications, approve color proofs, and implement customer-specific requirements such as varnish, coatings, or special finishing.
- Manage consumables inventory (inks, toners, blankets, fuser oil, cleaning solvents, media) and notify purchasing of low stock to prevent production delays.
- Execute variable data printing (VDP) jobs with accuracy, ensuring variable content integrity, data merge checks, and proper serialization when required.
- Follow and enforce safety protocols, lockout/tagout procedures, and material handling guidelines to protect personnel and equipment.
- Train and mentor junior operators and production assistants on press operation, color basics, preflight procedures, housekeeping, and safety to build team capability.
- Implement continuous improvement initiatives in setup time reduction, waste minimization, and process standardization; document standard operating procedures (SOPs) and best practices.
- Prepare jobs for post-press finishing, communicating trim, fold, and bindery requirements and ensuring accurate handoffs to finishing and shipping teams.
- Maintain accurate job tickets, shift logs, downtime records, and production KPIs in manufacturing execution systems (MES) or enterprise resource planning (ERP) tools.
- Support multi-shift operations by performing shift handovers, recording outstanding issues, and ensuring continuity of print specifications and quality standards.
- Validate special finishing instructions such as foil, laminates, embossing, die-cut registration marks, and how these will affect press set-up and run conditions.
- Participate in color proofing sessions with customers or account managers to achieve approved visual targets and document signed approvals for production.
- Ensure environmental and regulatory compliance for waste disposal, solvent handling, and emissions according to company policies and local regulations.
- Collaborate with maintenance and engineering to test upgrades, firmware, and press add-ons, providing operator feedback and acceptance testing for new capabilities.
Secondary Functions
- Maintain a clean, organized press area, tools, and spares to company 5S and housekeeping standards to support safe and efficient operations.
- Assist with inventory cycle counts, labeling, and storage of print media and consumables to improve stock accuracy and reorder timing.
- Provide input to production planning by flagging potential scheduling conflicts, long lead-time materials, or capacity constraints.
- Help prepare shipping documentation, packaging, and staging for completed print runs to ensure accurate delivery and reduce transit damage.
