The Digital Set Designer is a hybrid creative-technical role responsible for designing, building, and delivering high-quality virtual environments for film, television, commercial, live events and XR experiences. Working at the intersection of art direction and real-time technology, the Digital Set Designer collaborates with production designers, virtual production supervisors, VFX, camera, and lighting teams to translate concept art and story needs into performant, photoreal or stylized digital sets using industry-standard tools (Unreal Engine, Unity, Maya, Blender, Substance, Houdini). Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Collaborate closely with the production designer, director, virtual production supervisor, and VFX leads to interpret concept art, storyboards, and shot lists into cohesive, camera-ready digital sets optimized for on-set or in-engine capture.
  • Design and construct high-fidelity digital environments using real-time engines (primarily Unreal Engine) and DCC tools (Maya, Blender), ensuring accurate scale, camera blocking, and spatial continuity for multi-camera shoots and LED-volume production.
  • Create and refine modular set pieces, props, and environment assets with production-ready topology, UVs, and PBR textures to meet artistic intent while minimizing memory footprint and draw calls for real-time performance.
  • Develop lighting setups and look development (lookdev) in real-time that match on-set references and HDRI capture, balancing artistic lighting with the technical constraints of LED walls, live compositing, and camera exposure.
  • Implement LOD systems, occlusion culling, bake lightmaps or use dynamic lighting where appropriate, and manage streaming/level-of-detail strategies to guarantee stable frame rates during live capture.
  • Build and author shaders and material networks (Unreal Material Editor, HLSL/Shader Graph, Substance) to achieve realistic surfaces, translucency, and special effects consistent with production design.
  • Integrate camera tracking data, mocap streams, and timecode into the virtual scene, ensuring precise alignment between physical camera movement and in-engine cameras for clean composite results.
  • Optimize complex scenes via texture atlasing, mesh reduction, instancing, runtime profiling and GPU/CPU bottleneck analysis using tools like Unreal Profiler, RenderDoc, and engine stat tools.
  • Work with VFX and compositing teams on green-screen and LED volume workflows, supplying mattes, depth passes, and plate-matched renders for seamless hybrid production.
  • Assemble and manage scene files, streaming levels, asset libraries and versioned builds to ensure fast iteration loops on-set and reproducible set states across departments.
  • Conduct look checks, camera tests, and iterative reviews with directors and DPs to dial in the aesthetic, camera framing, depth cues, and parallax required for storytelling.
  • Collaborate with texture artists and lookdev to create material variations and weathering/aging passes for environment storytelling and continuity across scenes.
  • Script and maintain small pipeline tools (Python, Blueprints, MEL, or shell scripts) to automate repetitive tasks such as batch export, naming conventions, LOD generation, and content packaging for real-time engines.
  • Coordinate with production managers and vendors to scope asset delivery schedules, manage milestones, and prioritize tasks to meet tight shoot and post schedules.
  • Troubleshoot on-set technical issues with real-time renderers, playback servers, NDI/Spout streams, LED media players, and camera-sensor sync to minimize downtime during shoots.
  • Produce shot-ready render caches, proxy builds and offline previews for editorial and previs teams to support creative decision making prior to finalizing high-res assets.
  • Maintain documentation of scene setup, asset usage, and best practices for the virtual production pipeline to onboard team members and ensure consistent output.
  • R&D emerging techniques (ray tracing hybrid workflows, Nanite/virtualized geometry, Lumen/global illumination, volumetric effects) to inform pipeline improvements and elevate visual quality.
  • Ensure all assets follow studio naming conventions, metadata standards, and cross-platform compatibility to facilitate handoffs between animation, VFX, and post-production.
  • Mentor junior environment artists and interns, run training sessions on engine workflows, and review art to maintain high creative and technical standards across the environment team.
  • Prepare and deliver tech specs and test builds for on-set rehearsals, including GPU/CPU budgets, texture streaming parameters, and recommended runtime settings for target hardware.
  • Collaborate with sound and stage teams to integrate environment-driven cues, animated elements and interactive triggers that affect live-action performance and capture.
  • Validate final composite frames and provide corrective passes or color-managed exports required by online editorial and finishing teams.
  • Participate in sprint planning, daily standups and cross-department reviews, providing realistic time estimates and risk assessments for digital set deliverables.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain and update the asset management system and cloud repositories to ensure version control and fast retrieval for time-sensitive shoots.
  • Support production by creating quick-turn explainer visualizations and previs to help directors visualize camera moves and performance within virtual sets.
  • Assist in budgeting, vendor RFQs and asset bidding for external modelers, texture artists, and technical artists when additional capacity is required.
  • Help QA and log technical issues discovered during playback or capture, and coordinate fixes with engine and IT teams.
  • Contribute to post-mortems and process documentation to continuously refine virtual production workflows and reduce production risk.
  • Provide on-call support during rehearsals and shoots, troubleshooting networking, playback, and synchronization problems between the virtual environment and physical production.
  • Train camera and stage crew on essential best practices for filming with LED walls and mixed-reality setups (exposure, flicker mitigation, lens calibration).
  • Build and maintain quick-reference guides and cheat sheets for common engine tasks, naming standards, and lighting presets used across productions.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Expert proficiency in Unreal Engine (scene composition, level streaming, material editor, sequencer, profiling) and production-ready real-time workflows.
  • Strong 3D modeling and asset creation skills using Maya, Blender or 3ds Max; ability to produce clean topology, UVs, and optimized meshes.
  • Advanced PBR texturing and lookdev using Substance Painter/Designer, Mari or equivalent; texture baking and atlas creation.

  • Experience with terrain systems, foliage, procedural generation and Houdini workflows for environment creation is a plus.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Film Production, Animation, Computer Graphics, Game Design, Visual Effects, Architecture, Industrial Design, or equivalent professional experience.

Preferred Education:

  • Advanced degree or specialized training in Virtual Production, Real-Time Rendering, VFX, or a related discipline, or formal coursework/certification in Unreal Engine.

Experience Requirements
