Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop and execute a long‑term strategic plan for the athletic department that aligns with institutional priorities, increases competitive success, enhances student‑athlete academic and personal development, and clearly defines measurable goals for performance, revenue, and community impact.
  • Lead the preparation, administration, and oversight of the department’s annual operating budget, capital expenditure plans, and multi‑year financial forecasts; identify cost-savings opportunities and ensure fiscal sustainability while investing in priority programs.
  • Serve as the institution’s primary compliance officer for intercollegiate athletics: maintain up‑to‑date policies and processes to ensure full compliance with NCAA/NAIA rules, Title IX requirements, conference regulations, and institutional policies; lead investigations and corrective action when violations occur.
  • Build, manage, and mentor a high‑performing senior leadership team (associate and assistant athletic directors, business and operations staff, compliance, marketing, and development personnel), establish clear performance expectations, and implement professional development plans.
  • Recruit, hire, retain, and evaluate head and assistant coaches; negotiate employment agreements and contracts; set coaching expectations for competitive performance, recruiting practice ethics, student‑athlete development, and community engagement.
  • Lead fundraising, development, and revenue generation initiatives by cultivating major donors and corporate partners, overseeing annual giving, capital campaign priorities, naming rights negotiations, and developing a compelling case for support to increase philanthropic investment.
  • Oversee facilities planning, capital projects and maintenance: prioritize facility upgrades, schedule capital improvements, manage relationships with campus planning and external contractors, and ensure facilities meet safety, accessibility, and competitive standards.
  • Direct and approve all external affairs, communications and marketing strategies for athletics: enhance brand and reputation, coordinate media relations, social media strategy, ticket sales, broadcast/media rights, and community engagement campaigns to grow attendance and visibility.
  • Champion student‑athlete welfare by coordinating academic support services, mental health and sports medicine resources, nutrition programs, career services, and life skills initiatives that support retention, graduation rates, and post‑graduation success.
  • Establish and monitor department risk management and safety protocols: concussion management, emergency preparedness, travel policies, insurance, and liability mitigation in coordination with campus risk management and athletic trainers.
  • Oversee scheduling and event management for competitions, practices, camps, and special events including contract negotiation with visiting teams, facility operations, security, ticketing logistics, and game‑day staff coordination.
  • Implement diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) strategies that promote representation among coaches, staff and student‑athletes, remove barriers to participation, and ensure cultural competency across programs and recruitment practices.
  • Negotiate and manage contractual agreements including coach and staff contracts, vendor and supplier contracts, broadcast and sponsorship deals, and facility use agreements; ensure contracts align with institutional policy and best financial practices.
  • Coordinate with admissions and recruiting departments to develop admission and scholarship strategies that support roster management, academic standards, and competitive recruiting while maintaining compliance with institutional and regulatory rules.
  • Serve as the chief liaison to conference offices, peer institutions, NCAA/NAIA committees, local government, and community stakeholders; represent the institution at conference meetings, enforcement hearings, and public forums.
  • Develop performance metrics and dashboards for athletics operations—competitive results, academic progress rates, revenue streams, budget variance, and community engagement—and report regularly to the president, board of trustees, and other senior leaders.
  • Lead strategic initiatives to grow non‑traditional revenue (campus camps, facility rentals, licensing, licensing partnerships, digital content monetization) through entrepreneurial programming and partnerships.
  • Manage compensation and human resources issues for athletic department employees including performance evaluations, disciplinary actions, searches, and succession planning in alignment with university HR policies.
  • Ensure a high standard for coaching ethics and recruiting practices by implementing education and monitoring programs for staff and student‑athletes that reduce compliance risk and promote institutional values.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Sports Management, Business Administration, Education, Recreation, or related field.

Preferred Education:

  • Master's degree in Sports Administration, Higher Education Leadership, MBA, M.Ed., or comparable graduate degree preferred.
