🎯 Role Definition

We are hiring a Disaster Relief Worker to join fast-paced emergency response teams delivering lifesaving assistance in natural disasters, complex emergencies, and urgent humanitarian crises. The Disaster Relief Worker will conduct rapid needs assessments, coordinate distributions of food, water, shelter and non-food items, support emergency shelter and camp management, provide basic first aid and psychosocial support, maintain accurate beneficiary and logistics records, and liaise with local authorities, partners, and communities to ensure safe, equitable, and accountable relief operations. This role requires adaptability, cultural sensitivity, strong communication, and proven ability to work in austere and unpredictable environments.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct rapid on-site multi-sectoral needs assessments (shelter, WASH, food security, health, protection) immediately after incidents to prioritize life‑saving interventions and inform response plans.
  • Coordinate and execute time-sensitive distributions of emergency relief items (food, water, hygiene kits, blankets, shelter kits) ensuring equitable targeting, safe distribution points, and adherence to protection principles.
  • Set up, manage, and maintain emergency shelters and temporary accommodation (tents, collective centers), including layout planning, site safety, hygiene promotion, and occupant registration.
  • Provide direct lifesaving first aid and basic medical triage, including wound care, stabilization, and referral coordination with medical partners and local health facilities.
  • Implement beneficiary registration, data collection, and case management processes using digital or paper-based tools to track assistance, prevent duplication, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Maintain accurate, timely logistics records—inventory control, stock rotation, asset tagging, transport manifests—and coordinate timely resupply to field locations.
  • Liaise with local government authorities, community leaders, UN agencies, and partner NGOs to coordinate activities, share situational updates, and integrate interventions into broader response frameworks.
  • Facilitate safe evacuation and temporary relocation of at-risk individuals, families, and communities, ensuring special needs populations (children, elderly, persons with disabilities, GBV survivors) receive prioritized support.
  • Design and lead community engagement and information campaigns to communicate services available, complaint/feedback mechanisms, and safety messaging in appropriate languages and formats.
  • Monitor and report on program indicators, daily situation reports (SITREPs), beneficiary feedback, and incident reports to supervisors and donor partners as required.
  • Maintain personal and team safety protocols, conduct regular safety briefings, and enforce security measures in accordance with organizational policies and local context.
  • Coordinate transport and field logistics: vehicle scheduling, driver management, route risk assessments, and fuel/maintenance planning to ensure uninterrupted operations.
  • Deliver basic psychosocial first aid and refer cases to protection and mental health specialists, providing a compassionate presence and confidentiality for survivors.
  • Oversee cash assistance or voucher programs where applicable, including beneficiary selection, distribution, reconciliation, and fraud prevention measures.
  • Support shelter repairs, debris removal activities, and transitional shelter construction by supervising local labor, ensuring technical standards, and monitoring quality.
  • Conduct damage and needs assessments for housing, infrastructure, and livelihoods to inform recovery planning and early recovery interventions.
  • Train and mentor volunteers, community focal points, and junior staff on safe distribution practices, protection-sensitive approaches, and data collection methodologies.
  • Implement and monitor infection prevention and control (IPC) measures in collective centers, distribution sites, and community gatherings, particularly during public health emergencies.
  • Support protection mainstreaming efforts by identifying protection risks, reporting protection concerns, and adapting response modalities to reduce harm and exclusion.
  • Ensure adherence to humanitarian standards (Sphere, Core Humanitarian Standard) and donor compliance requirements in implementation, monitoring, and reporting.
  • Coordinate waste management, latrine construction oversight, and clean water point maintenance in collaboration with WASH teams to reduce health risks in camps and settlements.
  • Participate in after-action reviews, lessons-learned sessions, and continuous improvement processes to refine field procedures and enhance response quality.

Secondary Functions

  • Support program monitoring and data quality checks, compile routine reports and contribute to post-response evaluations and M&E activities.
  • Assist in preparing donor and internal narrative reports, case studies, and beneficiary testimonials to demonstrate impact and compliance.
  • Contribute to contingency planning and prepositioning of relief stocks, including site selection, warehousing coordination, and stock rotation plans.
  • Facilitate community-based feedback, complaints and referral mechanisms, triaging and escalating sensitive protection or fraud cases to specialized teams.
  • Provide on-the-ground support for recruitment, onboarding and coordination of short-term surge staff and volunteers during peak response periods.
  • Participate in training design and delivery for local partners, community volunteers, and staff on topics such as SAFETY, first aid, protection, and psychosocial support.
  • Maintain and service field equipment and PPE inventories, coordinate repairs, and recommend procurement priorities to supervisors.
  • Support mapping and GIS activities by collecting location data, registering households and camp layouts to inform planning and services coverage.
  • Assist logistics teams with customs, import clearances, and coordination with local authorities for humanitarian cargo movement.
  • Provide translation and interpretation support or cultural mediation when multilingual skills are available to ensure inclusive communication.

Required Skills & Competencies

Minimum Education:
