Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Verify the accuracy, appropriateness and legality of prescriptions and medication orders by reviewing patient profiles, checking drug-drug and drug-allergy interactions, dose calculations, renal/hepatic adjustments, and clinical indications prior to dispensing.
- Accurately compound, prepare and dispense prescription medications — both sterile and non-sterile when applicable — following established standard operating procedures (SOPs), USP <797>/<800> guidelines, and manufacturer directions to ensure patient safety.
- Counsel patients and caregivers on medication indication, proper administration, side effects, storage, adherence strategies, and missed dose instructions; document counseling and escalate complex clinical concerns to prescribers.
- Manage controlled substances and scheduled medications in accordance with federal and state laws (including DEA requirements), maintain accurate controlled substance inventories, perform regular reconciliation, and prepare reports for audits and inspections.
- Supervise, train and mentor pharmacy technicians and support staff, delegate dispensing tasks appropriately, verify technician-verified work, and maintain competency through cross-training and periodic performance assessments.
