The Display Designer is responsible for translating brand strategy and retail merchandising direction into compelling, sale-driving physical and digital displays. This role blends creative concept development, technical drawing and prototyping, vendor coordination, project management and installation oversight to deliver consistent, on-brand experiences across windows, shop-in-shop environments, point-of-purchase (POP) fixtures and experiential retail activations. The Display Designer works closely with merchandising, marketing, store operations and sourcing teams to ensure displays are buildable, cost-effective, safe and optimized for conversion.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop original display concepts and visual merchandising solutions that interpret seasonal marketing campaigns and product strategies while maximizing sales and customer engagement.
  • Create detailed CAD drawings, technical specifications, scale elevations and measurement packages for fixtures, window displays and POP units to guide fabrication and installation.
  • Produce high-fidelity 3D renderings, photorealistic visuals or physical mockups to present creative concepts to cross-functional stakeholders and secure approvals.
  • Translate merchandising briefs into buildable design solutions by selecting materials, finishes, hardware, lighting and fabrication methods that meet budget, timeline and sustainability goals.
  • Prepare comprehensive production packages including cut lists, bill of materials (BOM), assembly instructions and vendor-ready artwork to ensure accuracy in fabrication.
  • Collaborate with sourcing, procurement and vendors to obtain quotes, evaluate samples, negotiate costs and select reliable manufacturers for prototype and production runs.
  • Manage the prototyping process: oversee model making, test fittings, iterative design adjustments and final sign-off on production-ready fixtures.
  • Lead relationship management with external vendors, sign shops and carpentry teams to ensure quality control, lead-time adherence and compliance with specifications.
  • Coordinate end-to-end installation logistics, providing on-site direction during install days, validating site conditions, and troubleshooting field issues to maintain rollout schedules.
  • Ensure all display elements comply with local building codes, safety standards, ADA accessibility and store operations requirements.
  • Maintain and update a central display asset library and documentation repository that includes CAD files, dielines, templates, photography and usage guidelines for cross-functional teams.
  • Partner with merchandising and marketing to optimize display layouts for product adjacencies, SKU turnover, promotional windows and conversion uplift.
  • Conduct store audits and post-installation reviews to assess display performance, identify operational or design improvements and iterate on future designs.
  • Prepare accurate project budgets, cost estimates and variance reports; track spend and recommend value-engineering solutions without compromising brand intent.
  • Create seasonally adaptable display systems and modular fixtures that reduce cost and increase re-use across stores and markets.
  • Present design concepts, timelines and budgets to internal stakeholders and senior leadership, incorporating feedback and aligning to business objectives.
  • Train store visual teams and district managers on installation, merchandising standards and maintenance procedures for temporary or permanent fixtures.
  • Develop signage, point-of-sale graphics and production-ready artwork aligned to brand typography, color systems and messaging guidelines.
  • Coordinate cross-functional project schedules with merchandising, marketing, store operations and retail planning to ensure timely rollouts and campaign synchronization.
  • Monitor industry trends in retail design, materials and technology (e.g., AR/interactive elements, LED integrations) and recommend innovations that enhance in-store experiences.
  • Create and maintain risk assessments and installation checklists to minimize health and safety incidents and protect store assets during buildouts.
  • Manage multiple concurrent projects from concept through implementation, prioritizing tasks and resources to meet critical retail launch dates.
  • Evaluate display performance using sales data and store feedback to inform design improvements and ROI-focused merchandising strategies.
  • Support the creation of seasonal design standards and global visual guidelines that enable consistent brand presentation across diverse retail environments.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc display requests from merchandising or marketing teams, producing rapid concept sketches, layout plans and quick-turn prototypes.
  • Contribute to the visual merchandising strategy and roadmap by identifying scalable systems and cost-saving initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the store operations and planning teams to translate design concepts into installable store plans that respect footprint limitations and traffic flow.
  • Participate in production planning, sprint reviews and creative planning sessions to align design priorities with merchandising timelines.
  • Collect and analyze store-level feedback and installation metrics to inform continuous design improvements and lifecycle planning for fixtures.
  • Facilitate sample fulfillment: request material swatches, maintain sample inventory and distribute prototypes for stakeholder review.
  • Maintain up-to-date supplier and cost databases to accelerate quoting and reduce lead times during peak seasonal rollouts.
  • Assist in tendering and RFP processes by preparing technical drawings and scope documents for prospective vendors.
  • Provide creative support for in-store events and experiential activations, including temporary builds, wayfinding and interactive components.
  • Document post-project learnings and produce case studies that capture process improvements, timelines and cost outcomes for future reference.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite — Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign for concept art, dielines and artwork preparation.
  • Advanced competency in CAD software (AutoCAD, Vectorworks or similar) for technical plans and fixture documentation.
  • Experience with 3D modeling and rendering tools (SketchUp, Rhino, Blender, KeyShot, or 3ds Max) to create photorealistic visualizations and shop-ready visuals.
  • Strong understanding of materials, finishes, fabrication techniques (wood, metal, acrylic, foam, thermoforming) and joinery to produce buildable designs.
  • Skilled in producing production-ready artwork: dielines, cut files, CNC-ready files, and artwork bleed/safe area management.
  • Proven experience in prototyping and model-making, including small-scale and full-scale mockups.
  • Budgeting and cost estimation skills including BOM creation, vendor quoting and cost reconciliation.
  • Experience managing fabrication vendors and production calendars with knowledge of lead times, QA and logistics.
  • Solid knowledge of lighting design basics (LEDs, accent lighting) and how illumination affects merchandise presentation.
  • Competent in Microsoft Office / Google Workspace for project management, scheduling and stakeholder communication.
  • Familiarity with sustainable materials and design-for-reuse practices; ability to recommend eco-conscious alternatives.
  • Experience working with fixture engineers or manufacturers to translate concepts into engineered solutions and scalable production.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Industrial Design, Visual Merchandising, Interior Design, Product Design, Set Design, Graphic Design, or a related discipline.

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree plus certifications or coursework in CAD/3D modeling, retail design, or project management. A Master’s degree in a related field is a plus for senior roles.
