Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Manage, coach, and develop a team of associates and team leads across receiving, putaway, picking, packing, and shipping to meet daily productivity and accuracy targets while maintaining high morale and low turnover.
  • Plan and execute shift labor schedules, breaks, and overtime to align staffing with forecasted volumes and service windows, ensuring cost effective coverage and compliance with labor laws.
  • Own daily KPI performance (OTD shipments, order accuracy, dock-to-stock, cycle count accuracy, units per hour) and produce clear action plans to address variances; report results to operations leadership.
  • Supervise inbound operations including unloading, staging, inspection, and putaway to ensure receiving SLAs and first-pass quality for all suppliers and carriers.
  • Direct outbound processes—picking, packing, labeling, staging, and loading—ensuring compliance with carrier requirements and readiness for scheduled departures.
  • Ensure inventory integrity through rigorous cycle counts, root-cause investigations for inventory discrepancies, reconciliation processes, and continuous improvement of count procedures.
  • Enforce and promote workplace safety and regulatory compliance (OSHA, DOT, company safety standards), conduct safety audits, lead toolbox talks, and respond to incidents with corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Implement and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), work instructions, and best practices for all DC activities; ensure all team members are trained and audited for compliance.
  • Operate and optimize Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) and other ERP tools to route work, prioritize orders, and capture accurate inventory transaction data.
  • Lead onboarding, training, and performance management activities including daily coaching, formal evaluations, disciplinary actions, and career development plans.
  • Coordinate with maintenance and engineering teams to ensure material handling equipment (forklifts, conveyors, sorters) is inspected, repaired, and available to meet throughput needs.
  • Manage quality control processes for returns, damaged goods, and customer claims, including disposition, documentation, and follow-up with vendors or carriers.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives (Lean, 5S, Kaizen events) to reduce waste, shorten cycle times, and increase throughput while maintaining safety and quality.
  • Collaborate with Transportation, Purchasing, Customer Service, and Sales to prioritize orders, resolve exceptions, and optimize flow during peak periods and promotional events.
  • Monitor and manage shrinkage and loss prevention programs, implement controls, and partner with security to investigate and remediate losses.
  • Prepare and manage operational reporting, shift handoffs, daily briefings, and post-shift reviews to ensure seamless shift-to-shift continuity and transparency.
  • Supervise temperature-sensitive or hazardous product handling where required, ensuring compliance with storage, labeling, and transport regulations.
  • Oversee vendor and third-party logistics (3PL) interactions within the DC footprint, verifying SLA adherence, invoice accuracy, and quality of outsourced services.
  • Lead planning and execution for seasonal surge, promotions, and product launches, including temporary labor strategy, workspace reconfiguration, and KPI targets.
  • Maintain accurate documentation for audits, regulatory inspections, and customer requirements; support internal and external audits through evidence and corrective action plans.
  • Manage small operational budgets and expense controls for shift-level needs (supplies, PPE, equipment consumables) and recommend CAPEX for capacity or safety investments.
  • Act as a point of escalation for operational disruptions (system outages, carrier failures, staffing shortfalls), coordinating recovery plans to minimize customer impact.

Secondary Functions

  • Support cross-functional projects such as WMS upgrades, voice-picking rollouts, or automation integrations by providing operational input, test scenarios, and pilot supervision.
  • Mentor emerging frontline leaders and participate in succession planning and talent development initiatives across the distribution network.
  • Assist with tactical procurement of consumables and coordination with supply chain planners to prevent stockouts of processing materials (labels, packing supplies).
  • Participate in continuous improvement steering committees and share operational metrics and best practices across sites to scale wins.
  • Provide ad-hoc analysis of throughput, labor productivity, and space utilization to support capacity planning and business reviews.
  • Facilitate communication between operations and commercial teams during service-impacting events and support customer-focused problem resolution.
  • Help maintain environmental health and safety records, incident tracking, and employee OSHA training compliance.
  • Serve as backup to other supervisory or managerial roles during absences, ensuring smooth leadership coverage and consistent operational execution.
  • Contribute to recruitment events, on-site interviews, and hiring decisions to build a strong operations workforce.
  • Implement and validate new SOPs and training materials following process change or technology deployment.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) operation and configuration experience (e.g., Manhattan, Blue Yonder/JDA, SAP EWM, Oracle WMS)
  • Inventory control and cycle count program management with demonstrated ability to investigate and correct discrepancies
  • Strong knowledge of shipping/receiving processes, bill of lading, palletization, cartonization, and carrier compliance
  • Hands-on experience with RF scanning technologies, barcode systems, and mobile devices used in DC operations
