Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Accurately load and unload trucks, trailers, and containers by hand and with powered equipment (pallet jack, electric pallet jack, order picker), ensuring all outbound freight is staged and secured to prevent damage in transit.

Stage freight in the dock area according to departure schedules and carrier cut-off times, prioritizing loads by route, carrier, and service type (LTL, FTL, expedited).
Perform quality checks on product condition and packaging integrity during loading/unloading to reduce claims and returns; quarantine damaged goods and log findings in inventory systems.
Use RF scanners, handheld devices, or warehouse management systems (WMS) to record receipts, putaways, picks, and load confirmations in real time, maintaining accurate inventory records.
Secure loads using straps, load bars, dunnage, and shrink-wrap to comply with DOT and carrier securement rules, reducing risk of rework during transit.
Adhere to company safety policies and OSHA regulations by wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE), maintaining clear egress and fire lanes, and participating in safety briefings.
Monitor dock activity to maintain an organized, clean, and hazard-free work environment; remove debris, sweep spills, and report maintenance needs promptly.
Communicate with drivers, carriers, and dispatch to coordinate arrival/departure times, trailer access, and load conditions, ensuring on-time shipping performance.
Assist with cycle counts, physical inventories, and product putaway to maintain stock accuracy and support inventory control processes.
Load mixed product shipments following specific stacking, weight distribution, and handling instructions to prevent crushing, contamination, or spoilage (especially for temperature-sensitive or hazardous materials).
Execute special handling requests such as pallet builds, rework, pallet breaks, and kitting to meet customer-specific packaging or order requirements.
Maintain accurate timekeeping and production logs, report productivity metrics (pallets per hour, dock turns, on-time shipments) to leads and supervisors.
Participate in training and cross-training programs to support multiple dock functions, including check-in, staging, and trailer maintenance, to drive operational flexibility.
Perform trailer inspections and report any structural damage, refrigeration failures, or sanitary issues affecting load quality; tag and isolate compromised trailers per policy.
Coordinate with Quality Assurance and Compliance teams when handling regulated materials, ensuring all required documentation (MSDS, HazMat manifests) accompanies shipments.
Support lane balancing and load sequencing by adjusting pallet order and location on the dock to optimize driver loading/unloading time and route efficiency.
Assist in onboarding new dock staff by demonstrating best practices for safe loading/unloading, proper use of lifting equipment, and correct documentation handling.
Participate in continuous improvement initiatives by suggesting process updates, reporting bottlenecks, and implementing time-saving dock layout or staging changes.
Execute emergency procedures such as spill response, fire watch, or first-aid notification in the event of accidents or incidents at the dock area.

Secondary Functions

Complete basic maintenance checks on forklifts and pallet jacks (fluid levels, battery charge, forks condition) and submit repair requests for equipment issues.
Support inbound inspection teams by sampling product for quality checks and labeling inspected pallets for putaway or quarantine.
Assist with staging and loading of seasonal, promotional, or supply chain surge inventory to meet peak demand cycles.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)
