Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Supervise and coordinate daily dock operations including inbound receiving, outbound shipping, cross-docking, and staging to meet customer delivery windows and internal KPIs such as on-time departure, order accuracy, and dock turnaround time.
- Manage, coach, schedule and evaluate a team of dock associates, dock clerks, and yard personnel; lead daily briefings, assign duties, and ensure staffing matches forecasted workload.
- Oversee loading and unloading processes to ensure product integrity and prevent damage; plan pallet patterns, load securement, and container sequencing for efficient trailer utilization.
- Enforce safety programs and regulatory compliance (OSHA, DOT, HazMat where applicable); conduct regular safety audits, incident investigations, and corrective action plans.
- Coordinate with transportation carriers, third-party logistics partners (3PLs), and drivers to optimize arrival/departure windows, reduce detention time, and manage appointment scheduling.
- Operate and authorize safe use of material handling equipment including forklifts, reach trucks, pallet jacks, dock levelers, and conveyors; ensure certifications are current and equipment inspections are completed.
- Use Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) and RF scanning devices to receive, verify, and putaway inbound product; verify BOLs, packing lists, and purchase orders against received goods.
- Inspect shipments for quantity and damage, document exceptions, and initiate claims or corrective actions with carriers and suppliers as required.
- Monitor and report daily KPIs including throughput, loading/unloading cycles per hour, damage rates, labor productivity, and dock dwell time; implement action plans to address variances.
- Maintain accurate shipment and receiving records, prepare shipping documentation (BOLs, manifests), and ensure proper labeling and documentation for cross-border and hazardous shipments.
- Plan and execute dock layout changes, staging areas, and traffic flow to maximize safety, minimize congestion, and improve efficiency during peak periods.
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives (Lean, 5S, Kaizen) focused on reducing touchpoints, increasing dock velocity, and lowering operational costs.
- Manage contingency plans for labor shortages, equipment failures, or severe weather events; coordinate overtime, split shifts, or temporary labor as needed.
- Train and certify new hires on safe work practices, material handling equipment, and company operational procedures; maintain training records and competency checks.
- Coordinate with inventory control to reconcile discrepancies identified at the dock and implement preventative measures to reduce future variances.
- Control and report on dock supplies, packaging materials, and shrink-wrap consumption; order consumables and manage vendor relationships for dock equipment servicing.
- Supervise yard operations including trailer spotting, yard checks, and trailer inventory to eliminate bottlenecks and ensure proper trailer rotation and staging.
- Ensure securement, segregation, and correct handling of hazardous materials (HAZMAT) and temperature-sensitive freight; monitor refrigeration/freezer docks for compliance.
- Facilitate cross-department communication with procurement, customer service, and planning teams to resolve shipment exceptions, expedite critical orders, and improve customer satisfaction.
- Perform routine audits of dock procedures, shipping accuracy, and quality checks; document findings and lead corrective/preventive actions.
- Oversee return-to-vendor (RTV) processing and disposition of damaged or rejected goods; ensure proper documentation and reconciliation with accounting and procurement.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe dock area; enforce housekeeping standards and 5S practices to reduce slip/trip/fall hazards and operational delays.
- Approve and monitor timekeeping, attendance, and payroll-related activities for dock personnel; administer progressive discipline and performance improvement plans as needed.
- Participate in capital budgeting and procurement decisions related to dock equipment, dock doors, and material handling technology to support operational growth.
Secondary Functions

Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)

- Forklift and powered industrial truck operation certification (counterbalance, reach trucks, pallet jacks) and proven safe operation record.

Minimum Education:
