Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Load and unload cargo from trucks, railcars and vessels using forklifts, pallet jacks, hand trucks and other mechanical handling equipment while following prescribed loading patterns to protect cargo integrity.
Secure and restrain freight using straps, chains, dunnage, lashing and blocking techniques to meet carrier, ship and OSHA requirements and prevent movement during transit.
Operate powered industrial trucks (counterbalance forklifts, reach trucks, order pickers) safely and efficiently; perform pre-shift safety checks and report defects to maintenance.
Stage inbound and outbound shipments by organizing pallets, containers and loose cargo to match shipping manifests, manifests and pick lists for on-time departure.
Perform accurate documentation of shipments including bills of lading (BOL), delivery receipts, packing lists, manifests and hazardous materials paperwork, ensuring signatures and timestamps are recorded.
Scan and update inventory and shipment data into Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) or handheld RF devices to maintain accurate inventory, cycle counts and traceability.
Inspect cargo for damage, moisture intrusion, pests or obvious discrepancies; note issues on paperwork and communicate with supervisors and carriers for resolution.
Communicate with truck drivers, vessel crew, planners and dispatchers to confirm load requirements, staging areas and priorities; coordinate safe pick-up and drop-off procedures.
Follow all safety protocols including lockout/tagout, confined space entry awareness, fall protection, PPE use and site-specific emergency procedures to minimize incidents.
Load, unload and position heavy lift cargo using rigging, slings and tag-line guidance in coordination with crane operators and riggers, performing hand signals or radio communication as needed.
Execute container stuffing and unstuffing operations including palletization, shrink-wrapping and labeling to comply with shipping instructions and international stuffing standards.
Monitor and maintain dock and yard housekeeping, removing debris, securing loose materials and ensuring aisles and exits remain clear for safe operations.
Assist in container inspection, seal verification and repair or reporting of container damage to operations and vessel/terminal supervisors.
Participate in daily briefings and shift handovers; convey safety observations, open issues, and special handling instructions to incoming shifts.
Support special cargo handling including oversized, heavy lift, hazardous materials and refrigerated (reefer) cargo, adhering to handling and temperature control protocols.
Perform basic preventive maintenance and cleaning on forklifts, pallet jacks, and dock equipment, and promptly report malfunctioning equipment to maintenance teams.
Execute load sequencing and prioritize shipments to meet cut-off times, minimizing detention, demurrage and ensuring tight schedule adherence for carriers and vessels.
Use handheld radios, ship-to-shore or terminal communication systems to manage movements, coordinate lifts and resolve on-dock conflicts rapidly.
Participate in incident investigations by providing factual accounts, completing required reports and helping implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
Comply with customs and import/export procedures by preparing required documentation, assisting customs brokers during inspections and maintaining chain-of-custody for regulated shipments.
Support seasonal surges, peak shifts and overtime schedules to meet operational demand and critical vessel/transport deadlines.
Train and mentor junior dock staff in safe lifting techniques, equipment operation, load securement and company policies to build a competent, safety-conscious team.
Execute yard management tasks such as trailer spotting, chocking, placement and tagging to optimize yard flow and reduce dwell times.
Coordinate with inventory control to perform cycle counts, reconcile discrepancies and support audits by locating items and validating records.

Secondary Functions

Maintain a working knowledge of carrier, port and terminal regulations; support compliance audits and corrective actions when required.
Assist operations planners with ad-hoc reports, discrepancy logs, and daily productivity tracking to improve throughput and identify bottlenecks.
Help prepare pre-shift checklists, incident summaries and shift performance metrics for supervisors and operations managers.
Support cross-functional teams (maintenance, safety, customs, logistics) on depot/terminal improvement projects and lean initiatives.
Provide courteous customer-facing support to drivers, vendors and vessel representatives, including directing arrivals and answering operational questions.
Participate in occasional night or weekend work and emergency response drills, including spill containment and first-responder support when trained.
Recommend process improvements and participate in stand-up meetings to continuous improvement (Kaizen) efforts on the dock.
Maintain up-to-date certifications and training records; schedule re-certification for forklift, HAZMAT and other required qualifications.
Assist in the onboarding process by demonstrating standard operating procedures and safety expectations to new hires.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

Basic mechanical troubleshooting and pre-shift inspection capability for forklifts, dock levelers and dock doors.
Proficient in basic arithmetic and load weight distribution calculations to prevent overloading and ensure balanced loads.
Valid site credentials where applicable (TWIC card, port ID), and willingness to obtain DOT/CDL, OSHA-10 or other required certifications.
Experience performing cycle counts, inventory reconciliation and supporting year-end audits.
