Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Design and deliver progressive, goal-oriented agility lesson plans for individual dogs and handlers as well as small and large group classes, adapting training methodology to the dog's age, breed, physical condition, temperament, and the handler's experience.
  • Conduct initial and ongoing behavioral and performance assessments to create individualized training plans that address foundation skills, obstacle mechanics, sequencing, speed control, and course strategy for competition and recreational teams.
  • Teach and coach handlers on effective handling techniques (e.g., front crosses, rear crosses, threadles, handling lines, timing, and body mechanics) so handlers can reliably guide their dogs through courses with clarity and confidence.
  • Plan and execute conditioning and fitness programs aimed at improving canine strength, endurance, flexibility, joint health and injury prevention using warm-ups, cool-downs, targeted exercises, and cross-training modalities.
  • Build, set up, and design agility courses and sequences using standard and modified obstacles (jumps, tunnels, A-frame, seesaw/teeter, weave poles, chute) to develop specific skills and challenge teams progressively.
  • Prepare and coach teams for competition—including trial strategy, choke management, equipment handling, ring routines, trial etiquette, and pre-trial mental preparation—to improve consistency, speed, and fault reduction in trial environments.
  • Provide in-class and private sessions that use positive-reinforcement training techniques (clicker training, marker training, food and toy rewards) and scientifically supported behavior modification approaches to shape reliable performance.
  • Monitor and evaluate canine health and movement during training; recognize signs of fatigue, stress, pain, and early injury and modify or pause activities accordingly and advise owners on veterinary follow-up when necessary.
  • Maintain detailed training records, progress notes, session plans, and trial logs for each dog/handler team; track measurable outcomes to inform future lesson planning and client updates.
  • Educate owners on home-practice programs, appropriate equipment (collars, leashes, footwear), safety protocols, and lifestyle factors (nutrition, rest, warm-up) that directly influence agility outcomes and canine wellbeing.
  • Deliver high-quality client communication—onboarding new clients, setting realistic goals, providing constructive feedback, and offering clear homework—while maintaining professional boundaries and managing expectations.
  • Run and supervise open practice sessions, drop-in clinics, themed workshops, and specialty courses (weave pole clinics, handling seminars, contact training) to increase client skill levels and club revenue.
  • Implement and monitor safety protocols for both dogs and handlers, including safe obstacle use, surface maintenance, footing checks, and emergency response plans for injuries or behavioral incidents.
  • Lead and train assistant coaches, apprentices, and volunteers; create coaching guides, standard operating procedures and mentoring plans to ensure consistent instructional quality across sessions.
  • Conduct video analysis and use session recordings to break down runs, demonstrate handling corrections, and accelerate handler learning through visual feedback and frame-by-frame review.
  • Coordinate and host or support agility trials, fun matches, and internal competitions—including ring setup, stewarding, scorekeeping, and volunteer coordination—to provide practical trial experience for students.
  • Manage class administration tasks such as scheduling, enrollment, waitlists, payments, client intake forms, releases, and incident reports using facility management software or spreadsheets.
  • Maintain and repair agility equipment and facility surfaces; perform regular safety inspections, order necessary parts/supplies, and ensure all tools and obstacles meet governing organization standards.
  • Work with veterinarians, physiotherapists, and conditioning specialists to develop rehabilitation-compatible training plans for dogs recovering from injury and to provide holistic, multidisciplinary care paths.
  • Promote the agility program through social media, local community outreach, partnerships with pet businesses, and client referral programs to attract new students and retain existing clients.
  • Ensure compliance with local regulations, insurance requirements, and affiliated organization rules (AKC, UKI, USDAA, ASCA, or other relevant bodies) when running classes, trials, and public events.

Secondary Functions

  • Provide occasional boarding/drop-in session oversight for training dogs when owners are unavailable, ensuring routines and training continuity are maintained.
  • Prepare and distribute class materials, handouts, and online resources (tutorials, drills, video examples) to reinforce learning and support remote practice.
  • Assist with facility cleanliness and organization—keeping training areas swept, disinfected, and free of hazards to support a professional training environment.
  • Participate in continuing education, industry conferences, and certification programs to maintain up-to-date best practices in canine training and sports performance.
  • Track inventory and order supplies such as rewards, target devices, replacement parts, and first-aid equipment to ensure uninterrupted training operations.
  • Collect client feedback, monitor satisfaction, and implement incremental improvements to class offerings, schedules, and pricing strategies.
  • Contribute to cross-disciplinary educational events (puppy foundations, obedience refreshers, behavior workshops) to grow the facility’s program depth and client engagement.
  • Create and maintain safety incident logs, injury reports, and follow-up communication with clients regarding health or behavioral issues arising during training.
  • Assist in budgeting and financial reporting related to program revenue, trial expenses, and equipment purchases when acting in a managerial capacity.
  • Help onboard new staff by contributing to training manuals, shadow-teaching sessions, and competency checklists for new coaches and volunteers.
