  • Conduct detailed pre-bath assessments that include temperament checks, visible skin conditions, matting level, and any signs of parasites or injury, and communicate findings to the groomer or supervisor before proceeding.
  • Safely and calmly handle dogs during bathing, rinsing, and drying to minimize stress and avoid injury, employing low-stress handling techniques and positive reinforcement appropriate for each animal’s temperament.
  • Execute full rinse cycles and ensure all product residues are removed to prevent skin irritation, with special attention to sensitive areas such as ears, face, paws, and underbelly.
  • Operate professional drying equipment (high-velocity dryers, stand dryers, towels) and hand-dry techniques to thoroughly dry coats while monitoring heat, noise, and stress levels to maintain animal comfort and safety.
  • Perform basic sanitary ear cleaning and plucking as allowed by salon policy, checking for signs of infection or excessive wax, and escalate any concerns to grooming staff or veterinary personnel.
  • Trim nails safely using clippers or grinders where permitted, recognizing quick location and handling anxious or wriggly dogs to reduce the risk of bleeding and injury.
  • Demat and de-shed using appropriate tools (slicker brushes, dematting combs, undercoat rakes) and pre-bath treatments to minimize discomfort and protect skin integrity.
  • Apply topical flea, tick, or medicated treatments under direction or per written protocol, documenting treatments given and client authorization when required.
  • Prepare animals for specific grooming services by performing breed-specific pre-bath treatments (conditioning, coat stripping, or specialized shampoos) as instructed by the groomer.
  • Maintain accurate and professional records of services provided, including products used, observed skin or behavioral issues, duration of service, and any client communications or special instructions.
  • Communicate clearly and courteously with clients during drop-off and pick-up, documenting special handling instructions, medical conditions, or behavioral concerns to ensure continuity of care.
  • Follow strict sanitation and disinfection protocols for bathing tubs, drying tables, tools, and work areas between each pet to prevent cross-contamination and control spread of parasites or infectious conditions.
  • Monitor and manage supplies of grooming products, towels, and cleaning agents; restock stations and notify management of low inventory or equipment maintenance needs.
  • Adhere to safety protocols for lifting and restraining animals, using appropriate equipment (slings, lifts, harnesses) for large, heavy, or immobile dogs to prevent employee and animal injury.
  • Identify and escalate health concerns such as wounds, skin infections, unusual lumps, or signs of systemic illness to supervisors or the on-call veterinarian, documenting observations and photographic evidence when appropriate.
  • Provide basic first aid as trained (bleeding control, wound cleaning) and support emergency procedures if an animal becomes distressed, overheated, or injured while in your care.
  • Participate in daily kennel and salon cleaning tasks, including laundry of towels and bedding, proper disposal of waste, and maintaining a clean, odor-controlled environment for animals and clients.
  • Assist groomers with pre- and post-groom handling tasks such as securing animals, removing bows or bandanas, and preparing finished pets for client pickup in clean, safe carriers or holding areas.
  • Train and mentor new bather staff or seasonal hires on bathing techniques, cleaning protocols, and shop safety to ensure consistent service quality and compliance with company standards.
  • Maintain and sanitize personal protective equipment (PPE) and use gloves, aprons, or face protection when handling medicated baths or animals with contagious conditions, following manufacturer safety data sheet recommendations.
  • Record and process payments, gift certificates, or service add-ons when trained to do so; escalate billing or service disputes to management.
  • Stay current with product knowledge, new bathing techniques, and animal behavior best practices by participating in in-house training, workshops, or online courses as offered.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist front-of-house staff during peak periods with client intake, scheduling follow-ups, and preparing paperwork for grooming appointments.
  • Support retail efforts by recommending shampoos, conditioners, and grooming supplies to clients based on coat type and skin condition, and by keeping retail displays organized and stocked.
  • Participate in community outreach events, mobile grooming demos, or adoption partner programs to represent the salon and educate pet owners on hygiene and basic coat care.
  • Help maintain social media content by photographing finished groom jobs for marketing purposes when consented to by the client and in compliance with privacy policies.
  • Contribute to salon process improvements by sharing observations about workflow bottlenecks, equipment issues, or product performance with management.
  • Cross-train in kennel, reception, or inventory duties to provide operational flexibility during staff shortages or promotional events.
