Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive initial behavioral assessments for dogs and owners, including medical history review, leash-reactivity evaluation, socialization level, and environmental stressors, then document findings and recommended next steps in the client record.
  • Design individualized, evidence-based training plans that integrate positive reinforcement, operant conditioning principles, counter-conditioning and desensitization techniques tailored to each dog’s breed, age, temperament and owner goals.
  • Deliver structured group obedience classes (puppy socialization, basic manners, intermediate obedience, off-leash control) with clear lesson objectives, step-by-step progressions, and homework assignments to ensure transfer of training into the home environment.
  • Conduct private one-on-one training sessions in clients’ homes or at the facility to address specific behavioral issues such as pulling on leash, poor recall, house soiling, resource guarding, separation anxiety and redirected aggression.
  • Teach and coach owners how to read canine body language, set appropriate management systems, implement consistent reinforcement schedules, and use humane training equipment properly (e.g., front-clip harnesses, martingale collars, long lines).
  • Implement behavior modification protocols for reactive and aggressive dogs that prioritize safety, use measured exposure and threshold work, and coordinate with veterinarians for medical or pharmacological considerations when appropriate.
  • Lead puppy socialization and foundational learning programs that include handling, bite-inhibition exercises, habituation to common stimuli, early leash training and introduction to classes in a safe, developmentally-appropriate way.
  • Utilize clicker training, marker signals, and other clear reinforcers to shape complex behaviors (heel, off-leash recall, place work) and escalate challenges systematically to build reliability across contexts.
  • Maintain accurate training records, attendance logs, progress notes and behavior assessments in client management systems and provide weekly or monthly progress summaries to clients.
  • Create and distribute training materials including handouts, follow-up emails, video demonstrations and online resources that reinforce in-class lessons and improve client retention.
  • Evaluate and adjust training strategies based on measurable KPIs such as client compliance, dog progress milestones, repeat business rate, and class completion outcomes.
  • Provide crisis management and immediate safety interventions for dogs showing sudden aggressive escalation, including emergency protocols, holding and referral to specialized behaviorists when cases exceed scope of practice.
  • Collaborate with veterinarians, groomers, shelter staff and other stakeholders to ensure training plans are medically appropriate and support multi-disciplinary behavior solutions.
  • Teach owners humane management strategies (crate training, baby gates, structured exercise schedules) to prevent problem behaviors and set dogs up for long-term success.
  • Offer remote/virtual training sessions and review client-submitted video for virtual behavior assessment, coaching, and remote progress checks, leveraging video conferencing tools and training platforms.
  • Mentor and train junior trainers and volunteers in class management, lesson planning, safety protocols and ethical training practices to maintain high-quality service across the team.
  • Run behavior intake and follow-up calls, convert assessments into paid service plans, recommend appropriate course packages and upsell additional services in a client-first, educational manner.
  • Ensure all training areas and equipment are maintained, sanitized and stored safely; manage inventory of training treats, toys, leashes, clickers and class supplies.
  • Deliver demonstrations and talks at community events, pet stores and adoption drives to build awareness, recruit students and promote best practices in dog ownership and training.
  • Stay current with continuing education: attend workshops, conferences and certification programs (e.g., CCPDT, KPA) and integrate new science-backed techniques into curricula.
  • Monitor and manage class rosters, enrollment, cancellations and waitlists; implement efficient scheduling practices to optimize occupancy and trainer utilization.
  • Create and maintain a safe, low-stress learning environment for dogs and owners by setting clear class rules, managing dog introductions, enforcing vaccination/health policies and handling behavioral incidents professionally.
  • Evaluate the success of behavior plans and, when progress is limited, provide clear, timely referrals to veterinary behaviorists or specialized consults, documenting rationale and next steps.
  • Develop and update curriculum content, lesson plans, and progression checklists to ensure consistent quality across sessions and scalable replication across multiple instructors or locations.
  • Track client satisfaction through surveys and follow-up, analyze feedback for continuous improvement, and proactively address concerns to maintain high retention and reputation.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with facility upkeep including cleaning training spaces, sanitizing equipment, and ensuring a safe environment for dogs and clients.
  • Support shelter or rescue intake processes with basic behavioral screenings, foster/trainer matching and short-term rehabilitation plans.
  • Help coordinate volunteer trainers, interns or apprentices by scheduling shadow sessions and providing structured learning objectives.
  • Maintain and update digital marketing content such as class listings, FAQs, blog posts and instructional videos to improve search visibility and client education.
  • Participate in local outreach and partnerships with vets, groomers and pet retailers to drive referrals and community-based education programs.
  • Perform light administrative tasks: process payments, update client invoices, manage class calendars and follow up on no-shows or missed lessons.
  • Manage inventory of training supplies and reorder consumables to avoid disruptions to classes and private sessions.
  • Provide ad-hoc training demonstrations for prospective clients, adoption events or corporate partnerships when requested.
  • Compile data on class outcomes, attendance and revenue for management reporting and program optimization.
  • Support emergency on-call rotation for severe behavior crises or urgent client consultations when needed.
