Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive behavioral and training assessments for new canine clients, documenting baseline behavior, triggers, environmental variables, medical history, and owner goals to develop individualized, evidence-based training plans that prioritize safety and humane methods.
  • Design, implement, and adapt progressive training curricula for puppies, adolescent dogs, and adults, using operant conditioning, classical conditioning, desensitization, counter-conditioning, and positive reinforcement to achieve measurable outcomes (e.g., reliable recall, sit-stay, reduced reactivity).
  • Deliver one-on-one private lessons, multi-dog group classes, and remote/virtual coaching sessions, tailoring pace and techniques to client learning styles and canine temperament while ensuring client engagement and comprehension.
  • Create and execute board-and-train programs with clear training objectives, daily training logs, scheduled owner follow-up sessions, and staged transition plans to ensure skill generalization and owner retention.
  • Implement specialized behavior modification programs for leash reactivity, fear/anxiety, resource guarding, separation anxiety, and dog-dog aggression, employing stepwise protocols, safety management, and in-depth progress tracking.
  • Teach and coach pet owners in humane handling, reward timing, marker training (clicker/marker), management strategies, and reinforcement schedules to empower consistent, long-term behavior change outside training sessions.
  • Run puppy socialization classes and early learning modules that emphasize critical period exposure, bite inhibition, habituation, and gentle handling to reduce future fear responses and promote confident adult behavior.
  • Use objective data collection (video, session notes, behavior metrics) to monitor progress, update training plans weekly, and present clear progress reports and next steps to clients, ensuring measurable improvement and client satisfaction.
  • Provide on-site and in-home environmental modification recommendations (crate training, management tools, exercise schedules, enrichment plans) to reduce problematic behaviors and optimize canine welfare.
  • Maintain strict safety protocols for all sessions (muzzles, secure handling, two-person interventions for high-risk cases), evaluating risk and implementing mitigation plans for staff, clients, and dogs.
  • Collaborate with veterinarians, veterinary behaviorists, and other allied professionals to identify and address medical contributors to behavior issues and coordinate multidisciplinary treatment when appropriate.
  • Educate staff, apprentices, and volunteers through mentoring, shadowing, and formal training modules to scale consistent, science-based training practices across the facility.
  • Schedule, manage, and invoice clients; maintain accurate client records, training contracts, consent forms, and vaccination/health documentation in compliance with company policies.
  • Conduct temperament testing and placement consultations for adoption/shelter dogs, recommending appropriate training pathways and match suitability to potential adopters.
  • Lead and develop specialty programs (service dog training, therapy dog preparation, competitive obedience classes, or agility fundamentals) with clear KPIs, curriculum, and certification pathways.
  • Troubleshoot complex or plateaued training cases by revisiting assessment data, modifying reinforcement strategies, and incorporating novel training probes to reignite progress and reduce relapse.
  • Provide emergency on-call guidance for client crises (bite incidents, sudden escalation in aggression, acute separation distress), documenting incidents and coordinating follow-up behavior plans.
  • Maintain facility cleanliness, equipment upkeep (leashes, harnesses, training aids), and inventory of training tools, ensuring all gear is safe, sanitized, and fit for use.
  • Deliver outreach and community education through workshops, demonstrations, and curated content (blog posts, social media tips, email newsletters) to build the organization’s brand as a trusted canine behavior resource.
  • Evaluate and recommend humane training aids and tools (front-clip harnesses, head halters, treat delivery systems) and advise against punitive tools, documenting rationale to educate owners on best practices.
  • Implement and maintain COVID-aware and zoonotic disease protocols as applicable, ensuring client and canine safety during in-person sessions.
  • Conduct follow-up assessments 30/60/90 days post-training to measure retention, update maintenance plans, and identify opportunities for refresher sessions or advanced classes.
  • Ensure compliance with local licensing, leash laws, insurance requirements, and professional certification standards, maintaining accurate continuing education records.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with marketing initiatives including writing client-facing content, creating educational videos, and participating in public demonstrations to attract new clients.
  • Support administrative tasks such as appointment scheduling, client intake, billing follow-ups, and CRM data entry to maintain a high-quality client experience.
  • Participate in community outreach events, shelter partnerships, and local pet expos to represent the training program and generate referral pipelines.
  • Help onboard and supervise apprentices, interns, and volunteers, providing hands-on feedback and evaluating competency for client-facing work.
  • Contribute to curriculum updates and training program evaluation by providing field feedback and success metrics to leadership.
  • Coordinate transport and logistics for dogs participating in board-and-train, competitions, or off-site behavior consultations.
  • Maintain and order training supplies, nutritional treats, and first-aid materials; ensure stock levels are monitored and reported.
  • Assist with light facility maintenance tasks such as cleaning training spaces, sanitizing equipment, and setting up class rooms to ensure a professional environment.
  • Collect client testimonials, manage post-session surveys, and escalate unresolved client issues to management for service recovery.
  • Support data-driven initiatives by tracking class completion rates, retention metrics, and conversion from workshops to paid services.
