Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Create detailed 2D drawings and 3D models from hand sketches, engineering notes, field measurements, and specifications using AutoCAD, Revit, SolidWorks or similar CAD software; produce accurate, production-ready files for manufacturing and construction.
  • Interpret architectural and engineering plans, technical specifications, and client requirements to generate dimensioned drawings, sections, elevations, and assemblies that meet project standards and regulatory codes.
  • Prepare and maintain drawing sets, revision histories, and version control for construction documents, ensuring each drawing is clearly labeled, dated, and conforms to company CAD standards and naming conventions.
  • Generate as-built drawings and update existing documentation following field verification, site surveys, or fabrication changes; coordinate changes with project team to reflect actual conditions.
  • Produce shop drawings, material lists, BOMs (bill of materials), and fabrication details for vendors and subcontractors, coordinating closely with procurement and fabrication teams to clarify tolerances and finishes.
  • Apply geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), welding symbols, surface finish notations, and other manufacturing annotations to drawings to ensure parts meet functional and assembly requirements.
  • Coordinate multi-discipline drawing integration by working with structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing teams to detect and resolve clashes, interferences, and sequence issues prior to construction.
  • Model and manage BIM elements (families, components, layers) for architectural and MEP projects to ensure consistent data across models and efficient information handoff to contractors and facilities teams.
  • Prepare detail drawings for custom components, assemblies, and fixtures, including exploded views and installation instructions, to support production, erection, and maintenance activities.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards and guidelines (ANSI, ISO, AISC, ASTM, local building codes) and incorporate specification requirements into contract drawings.
  • Review and check drawings produced by junior drafters and external consultants for dimensional accuracy, completeness, compliance, and constructability; provide clear markup and correction guidance.
  • Produce scaled site plans, floor plans, elevations, and roof plans from survey data; align architectural graphics with structural grids and coordinate points for accurate construction layout.
  • Convert legacy drawings (paper, PDF scans) into editable CAD formats, perform quality assurance on converted geometry, and standardize layers, line types, and block libraries for organization-wide reuse.
  • Collaborate with engineers to perform simple calculations for clearances, material take-offs, and preliminary fit checks, then incorporate findings into the drawing set.
  • Communicate directly with clients, contractors, fabricators and suppliers to clarify dimensions, material specifications, and installation sequences; document approvals and design decisions in project files.
  • Prepare permit submission drawings and respond to reviewer comments by revising drawings, providing clarifications, and tracking resubmissions until approval is obtained.
  • Manage drawing deliverables to meet project schedules and milestone dates; proactively escalate conflicts, resources constraints, or missing information that could impact drawing production timelines.
  • Implement and maintain CAD/BIM standards, templates, title blocks, layer conventions, and symbol libraries to improve efficiency and consistency across projects.
  • Assist with project estimating by supplying accurate quantities, material descriptions, and take-off data derived from CAD models and drawings.
  • Document and archive final drawing sets, ensuring that handover packages include drawings, transmittals, revision logs, and any associated digital models required for construction or manufacturing.
  • Support quality control processes by conducting drawing checks, clash detection runs, and compliance reviews prior to issue for construction or fabrication.
  • Train and mentor junior drafters on software best practices, drawing standards, and company workflows to increase team capability and reduce rework.
  • Participate in site visits and field verification when required to measure, photograph, and capture as-built conditions; translate those findings into accurate drawing updates.
  • Produce coordinated detail packages for complex assemblies and interfaces (penetrations, embed locations, splice details) to prevent field conflicts and ensure constructability.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain and update CAD/BIM template libraries, block repositories, and standardized detail libraries to accelerate drawing production and ensure consistency.
  • Assist engineering and design teams with preliminary layout studies and conceptual CAD sketches to support early-stage design decisions.

  • Coordinate with IT and CAD administrators to troubleshoot software issues, update licenses, and manage backups of drawing repositories.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD for 2D drafting and documentation; ability to create complex layouts, use blocks, attributes, and advanced annotation tools.
  • Experience with Revit and BIM workflows for architectural, structural, or MEP modeling, including family creation and parameter management.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
