Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Accurately measure windows, doors and openings on-site, accounting for mounting types (inside mount, outside mount), elevations, crown molding, radiators, and other obstructions to produce precise measurement reports and avoid costly rework.
  • Interpret design specifications, shop drawings and customer requests to select appropriate heading styles, linings, hems, pleats, and hardware that achieve the intended aesthetic and functional results.
  • Install curtain rods, traverse rods, ceiling and wall-mounted tracks, pocket tracks, and specialty mounting systems for both residential and commercial projects using power and hand tools while maintaining alignment, plumb, and level.
  • Install and fine-tune motorized drapery and shading systems, including low-voltage wiring, battery-operated drives, remote controls, and integration with smart-home platforms when required.
  • Perform on-site alterations and adjustments such as hemming, re-pleating, shortening, or lengthening drapery panels to ensure proper floor clearance and uniform pleat spacing at final installation.
  • Safely operate ladders, scaffolding and lifts to access high windows and tall drapery mounts while following OSHA guidelines and company safety procedures to protect clients and property.
  • Assemble and hang valances, cornices, pelmets and other decorative window treatments, ensuring seams, returns and miters are concealed and finished edges meet quality standards.
  • Evaluate wall and ceiling substrates, locate studs or appropriate anchors, and install heavy-duty anchors or blocking as required to support weight loads for large or commercial draperies.
  • Coordinate with the fabrication shop to confirm stitch patterns, linings, interfacings and hardware specifications; verify that finished goods match the approved sample and dimensions prior to installation.
  • Provide accurate installation time and materials estimates for service orders and change requests; document parts used and labor hours for billing and inventory tracking.
  • Inspect existing installations for wear, sagging, or mechanical failures; perform repairs or recommend replacement if components are beyond safe or economical repair.
  • Protect client homes and businesses during installations by using drop cloths, shoe covers, and careful material handling to prevent damage to flooring, furniture and fixtures.
  • Communicate professionally with customers during site visits to confirm placement, heights, and final product appearance; obtain sign-off on completed installations and explain product care instructions.
  • Troubleshoot motor, track and running system issues on-site, performing diagnostics, replacing worn components and testing operation until systems run smoothly and quietly.
  • Ensure compliance with manufacturer installation instructions, warranty requirements and local building codes; escalate issues that require engineering or structural correction.
  • Load and unload vehicles, organize tools and supplies for efficient routing of multiple installations in a single day; maintain vehicle inventory and report stock needs to the shop or manager.
  • Maintain detailed installation documentation including photos, notes on site conditions, hardware sizes and any deviations from original specifications for warranty and future service purposes.
  • Train and mentor junior installers or installation assistants on measurement techniques, proper hanger spacing, safe ladder usage and finishing standards to raise team quality and consistency.
  • Participate in pre-installation site surveys for commercial projects, collaborating with project managers, electricians and carpenters to sequence installation activities and minimize conflicts.
  • Implement quality assurance checks at the end of each job to verify alignment, hem lengths, hardware torque, motor programming and appearance meet company quality benchmarks.
  • Safely remove and responsibly dispose of old window treatments and packaging materials, or prepare returned products for restocking according to company policy and recycling guidelines.

Secondary Functions

  • Support post-installation service requests including motor reprogramming, track lubrication, and fabric cleaning recommendations.
  • Maintain and update job logs and scheduling systems to assist dispatchers with route planning and customer notifications.

  • Experience with motorized systems (Somfy, Lutron, Qmotion, etc.), including basic low-voltage wiring, programming remotes, and troubleshooting drives.
