Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Measure clients accurately and conduct thorough fittings, recommend and execute alterations to achieve the desired silhouette, balance and comfort while maintaining structural integrity of the garment.
  • Interpret fashion sketches, technical flats, and design briefs to develop detailed construction plans, select appropriate seams, finishes and reinforcement points, and advise on fabric behavior during construction and wear.
  • Draft, modify and grade patterns by hand and/or with CAD systems (e.g., Gerber, Optitex, Lectra), ensuring patterns are optimized for fit, fabric stretch, grain, and production efficiency.
  • Construct bespoke garments from muslin toile through to final couture finish, employing advanced techniques such as hand-finishing, couture seam treatments, underlining, boning, and hand-stitched hems and facings.
  • Execute complex alterations on wedding gowns, evening wear, and tailored garments — including rebalancing, re-lining, resizing, take-in/let-out, bust and shoulder adjustments, and zipper or closure replacements.
  • Perform precision sewing using a wide range of machines (industrial straight stitch, overlock/serger, blind hem, buttonhole machines) and hand-sewing methods for delicate finishes and couture details.
  • Select and source suitable fabrics, linings, interfacings, threads, trims, and embellishments; manage vendor relationships and ensure materials meet design and durability requirements.
  • Maintain and operate pressing and finishing processes to achieve professional garment presentation, including steaming, shaping with irons and tailors’ hams, and applying final trims and closures.
  • Produce accurate work orders, alteration tags, measurement records, and client files; maintain digital or paper records for consistent refitting and future garment production.
  • Collaborate with designers, pattern-makers, and production teams to refine prototypes, address fit issues, and translate sample feedback into final production-ready garments.
  • Manage multiple projects and deadlines in a small-batch or bespoke environment, prioritizing urgent alterations, fittings and couture deadlines while preserving high-quality standards.
  • Train and mentor junior seamstresses and apprentices on sewing techniques, machine maintenance, pattern interpretation, and quality expectations to build a skilled workshop team.
  • Inspect finished garments for quality control, checking seam strength, stitch consistency, accurate measurements, balanced hems, and overall garment symmetry before client delivery.
  • Provide client-facing consultations to advise on style modifications, fabric performance, and care instructions; present professional fit and styling recommendations to meet client expectations.
  • Perform pattern adjustments to accommodate body asymmetry, prosthetics, pregnancy or other special fitting needs while maintaining garment aesthetics and comfort.
  • Repair and restore vintage or delicate garments, including reconstructing seams, replacing linings, reinforcing weakened areas, and replicating period-appropriate construction techniques.
  • Implement and follow bespoke measurement protocols for made-to-measure work, ensuring repeatable fit outcomes and thorough documentation for future orders.
  • Advise on construction cost estimates and labor time for bespoke pieces, producing accurate quotes for both one-off garments and small production runs.
  • Ensure compliance with workplace health and safety standards for equipment operation (e.g., machine guarding, pressing irons), and maintain clean, organized workspaces and tool inventories.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships, managing expectations, scheduling fittings, following up after deliveries, and resolving post-delivery alteration requests with professionalism.
  • Collaborate on showroom and sample studio responsibilities, including building display garments, rotating lookbook samples, and supporting photoshoots with last-minute fitting and on-set repairs.
  • Monitor fabric waste and optimize cutting layouts to reduce cost and environmental impact while ensuring quality of pattern grain and repeat alignment.
  • Manage small-batch production runs, coordinate with cutters and finishers, oversee sample approvals, and ensure consistency across units for boutique or made-to-order collections.
  • Troubleshoot complex fit and construction problems through creative alteration solutions and incremental fitting adjustments until the garment meets the design and client requirements.

Secondary Functions

  • Keep inventory of fabrics, threads, trims and haberdashery; initiate purchase orders or requisitions to replenish critical supplies.
  • Support boutique operations by scheduling client appointments, preparing fittings rooms, and coordinating alteration pick-up/delivery logistics.
  • Assist with sample room organization, tagging, and archiving of patterns and toiles for reuse in future collections.
  • Participate in product development meetings to advise on construction feasibility, lead times, and cost-saving opportunities without compromising quality.
  • Prepare simple invoices, track billable alteration hours, and update order management systems with progress and completion statuses.
  • Contribute to training materials, how-to guides and standard operating procedures for consistent quality across stitchers and makers.
  • Support marketing efforts by providing garment expertise for product descriptions, technical information for e-commerce listings, and behind-the-scenes social content.
