Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Operate rotary drilling rigs, top drives, draw works, and associated rig equipment to execute drilling programs according to the well plan, maintaining optimal penetration rates and steady drilling parameters while protecting casing and well integrity.
Execute well-control procedures, perform BOP (blowout preventer) checks, pressure tests, and emergency shear/annular operations, ensuring compliance with IWCF/IADC well control standards and local regulations.
Monitor and interpret key drilling parameters (weight-on-bit, torque, RPM, pump pressures, flow rates, ROP) and adjust drilling operations in real time to optimize performance and minimize non-productive time (NPT).
Conduct pre-shift and post-shift inspections of rig components (rotary table, Kelly/Top Drive, mud pumps, mud pits, hoses, cranes, elevators) and document findings, performing or coordinating corrective maintenance as required.
Supervise safe tripping operations (running and pulling drill string), manage backreaming, pick-up and slack-off procedures, and ensure pipe handling follows established rig-up/rig-down and standoff protocols.
Collaborate with drilling engineers and directional drilling crews to execute directional and horizontal drilling plans, relay downhole parameter changes, and implement corrective actions for trajectory control.
Manage mud system operations in coordination with the mud engineer: mixing, density control, solids control (shale shakers, desanders), dilution, and chemical additions to maintain hole stability and prevent differential sticking.
Run and set casing and liners, support cementing operations by correlating pump volumes and pressures, and verify returns and cement placement per job specifications.
Troubleshoot mechanical and hydraulic failures on the rig, perform field repairs on pumps, winches, and motors, and coordinate third-party service technicians for complex repairs or machining.
Maintain and operate rig cranes and hoisting equipment safely, perform rigging and slinging for tool and tubular handling, and ensure all lifts meet load chart and tag-line control procedures.
Oversee trip tank measurements, hole cleaning monitoring, and cuttings control to minimize stuck pipe incidents and maintain hole condition.
Keep comprehensive well and daily drilling reports, shift logs, maintenance records, and NPT incident reports using company templates and digital reporting tools.
Implement environmental protection measures, including containment of drilling fluids, cuttings handling, spill prevention and response, and adherence to local environmental regulations and site permits.
Lead and participate in pre-job safety meetings, toolbox talks, HAZID/HAZOP sessions, and ensure strict adherence to personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements and permit-to-work systems on every shift.
Conduct BHA (bottom hole assembly) inspection and configuration checks prior to runs, verify weight ratings and tool compatibility, and liaise with wireline or logging crews to coordinate downhole tools and surveys.
Manage rig inventory and consumables, maintain spare parts stock levels for critical components (seals, bearings, drill collars), and coordinate procurement to minimize downtime.
Supervise and train junior crew members (floormen, derrickhands) on safe drilling practices, equipment operation, rig maintenance, and emergency response procedures to build team capability.
Perform housekeeping and rig integrity checks to ensure all walkways, stairways, and working decks remain clear, non-slip, and free from trip hazards.
Enforce and document lockout/tagout and isolation procedures during maintenance activities and verify post-maintenance restoration checks before returning equipment to service.
Coordinate with well service contractors (cementing, logging, fishing, well testing) to schedule operations, oversee rig support activities, and ensure contractor work adheres to the well program and safety standards.
Participate in root-cause analysis and continuous improvement initiatives to reduce NPT, extend equipment life, and optimize drilling processes through lessons learned and field-tested adjustments.
Respond to on-site medical and safety emergencies, execute evacuation plans, and maintain certifications in first aid, CPR, and H2S awareness for immediate response capability.

Secondary Functions

Prepare shift handover briefings and detailed transition notes to ensure continuity of operations and safe relay of ongoing issues between crews.
Assist field engineers and rig managers in collecting and organizing operational data for post-job analysis, cost tracking, and performance benchmarking.
Support regulatory inspections and audits by providing records, demonstrating procedures, and implementing corrective actions as required.
Coordinate routine maintenance schedules, vendor visits, and planned downtime to align with drilling milestones and budget constraints.
Contribute to training curriculum development for competency programs and participate in competency assessments for drilling personnel.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

Proven hands-on experience operating rotary and top drive drilling rigs, including start-up, shutdown, and routine operational adjustments.
Well control expertise with active certifications (IWCF or IADC Well Control up to relevant level) and practical experience conducting BOP function tests and pressure control operations.
Proficient in reading and interpreting drilling programs, well schematics, casing programs, mud programs, and BHA diagrams.
Strong mechanical aptitude: ability to troubleshoot and perform preventive maintenance on mud pumps, drawworks, top drives, hydraulic systems, pumps, and winches.

Experience coordinating with service companies for cementing, wireline, coiled tubing, and fishing operations, including supervising rig support activities.

Minimum Education:
