  • Perform rig-up and rig-down activities, including safe rigging, securing of load paths, and coordination of crane and lifting operations to move heavy equipment and tubulars during rig moves and well interventions.
  • Execute tripping operations (running and pulling drill pipe/tubing), ensuring correct makeup and breakout of connections, proper handling of pipe elevators, slips, and spin-offs while maintaining pipe tally and avoiding mechanical damage.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot mud and fluid systems: monitor pit levels, shale shaker performance, mud pumps, and mud properties; coordinate with mud engineer to manage fluid weight, viscosity, and solids control to maintain wellbore stability.
  • Conduct routine inspection, preventive maintenance, and lubrication of rig systems (diesel engines, gearboxes, hydraulic systems, pumps, winches, and power tongs); document maintenance activities and perform repairs or escalate to maintenance teams as needed.
  • Perform and document regular BOP (blowout preventer) and well control equipment checks, including pressure testing, function tests, and pre-job verification to ensure compliance with regulatory and company well control standards.
  • Participate in and often lead pre-job safety meetings (toolbox talks), permit-to-work checks, and HSE briefings; ensure all crew members follow lockout-tagout, confined-space, and fall-protection procedures.
  • Respond to well-control incidents and emergency situations: execute shut-in procedures, rig down operations, and emergency evacuation when required; participate in drills and maintain readiness for rapid response.
  • Maintain accurate drilling records and logs—daily drilling reports, trip reports, torque and drag records, fluid reports, and equipment maintenance logs—to support operations handover and regulatory audit requirements.
  • Supervise and mentor rig crew members (floorhands, derrickmen, and trainee drillers), assigning tasks, verifying competencies, and providing on-the-job training in drilling practices, safety, and equipment handling.
  • Ensure correct operation and maintenance of power tongs, tong stands, stabbing boards, and casing running tools during casing and tubing operations to achieve specified make-up torque and prevent thread damage.
  • Coordinate with directional drilling teams and measurement-while-drilling (MWD) specialists to execute directional or horizontal drilling sections, adjusting parameters and assisting with bottom hole assembly (BHA) changes.
  • Support cementing, casing, and completion operations by preparing and staging tubulars and equipment, assisting with cement plug placement, centralizer placement, and monitoring returns during cement jobs.
  • Enforce site housekeeping, spill prevention, and environmental controls—manage cuttings, fluids, and waste in line with company policies and environmental regulations.
  • Assist in inventory control: track and request spare parts, tubulars, consumables, and rig tools; maintain equipment calibration records and tool inspection logs.
  • Perform non-routine mechanical diagnostics on engines, hydraulic systems, and electric drives; liaise with maintenance engineers to plan corrective actions and ensure minimal downtime of critical rig systems.
  • Follow rig-specific and regional regulatory requirements for well construction, including barge and marine regulations for offshore rigs, and maintain documentation for inspections and compliance audits.
  • Implement continuous improvement ideas to increase drilling efficiency, reduce non-productive time (NPT), and lower operating costs—report lessons learned and contribute to post-job reviews.
  • Operate radio and telemetry communications effectively to coordinate with rig managers, directional drillers, surface engineers, and logistics for safe and efficient operations.
  • Support wireline, logging, and completion crews during running or retrieving of tools, ensuring proper rig floor setup and providing required assistance with lifting and handling equipment.
  • Maintain vigilance for gas or hydrocarbon shows, using gas detection equipment and following well-control escalation protocols; initiate shut-in actions if necessary.
  • Carry out pre-shift checks and handovers, ensuring all operational, safety and maintenance records are up-to-date and communicating any outstanding issues to incoming shifts.
  • Perform light fabrication and basic welding/fit-up tasks as required by rig maintenance schedules, ensuring work conforms to mechanical drawings and safety standards.

Secondary Functions

  • Support regulatory inspections, third-party audits and internal compliance reviews by preparing records, demonstrating equipment function, and correcting deficiencies identified.
  • Assist in development of rig-specific operating procedures and checklists, incorporating lessons learned and regulatory changes to improve operational reliability.
  • Contribute to incident investigations by providing factual accounts, maintaining scene integrity, and helping implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Participate in cross-functional planning sessions (logistics, HSE, maintenance and drilling engineering) to coordinate well activities, materials deliveries, and rig moves.
  • Help maintain training and competency matrices, ensuring all crew certifications (first aid, H2S, rigging, well control) remain current and documented.
  • Provide field input for procurement decisions on tooling, safety equipment, and spares based on observed wear patterns and operational needs.
