The operator conducts pre-flight planning and risk assessments, manages payloads (camera, LiDAR, multispectral sensors), captures high-quality aerial data, processes and validates outputs (orthomosaics, point clouds, thermal maps), and maintains aircraft and equipment while ensuring regulatory compliance (FAA Part 107 or local equivalent). This role requires a mix of hands-on piloting, mission planning, data processing, and strong communication to liaise with stakeholders and deliver actionable insights.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Plan, coordinate, and execute unmanned aircraft system (UAS) missions end-to-end, including site reconnaissance, risk assessment, NOTAM checks, airspace authorization (LAANC/COA) and stakeholder briefings to ensure compliant and efficient operations on scheduled aerial surveys, inspections, or media shoots.
  • Operate multi-rotor and fixed-wing drones in a variety of environments (urban, rural, industrial sites) under VLOS, EVLOS, or BVLOS frameworks where authorized, demonstrating precise aircraft handling, safe takeoff/landing, and emergency procedures proficiency.
  • Hold and maintain a valid FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate (or equivalent local certification) and ensure all flight crew documentation, logbooks and crew qualifications are current and accessible for audits, client review, and regulatory inspections.
  • Conduct thorough pre-flight and post-flight inspections and maintenance checks on UAS platforms, batteries, sensors, gimbals, propulsion systems, and accessories; log findings and coordinate repairs or replacement to maintain continuous airworthiness.
  • Integrate, operate, and troubleshoot payloads including high-resolution RGB cameras, thermal/infrared sensors, multispectral cameras, LiDAR units, and hyperspectral sensors to capture required data fidelity for survey, inspection, and analytics deliverables.
  • Develop and execute mission flight plans using mission-planning software (DroneDeploy, Pix4Dcapture, DJI GS Pro, UgCS, QGroundControl), optimizing flight lines, altitude, overlap, and sensor settings to achieve photogrammetric and LiDAR data quality requirements.
  • Capture geospatially accurate data using RTK/PPK GNSS workflows and ensure ground control point (GCP) placement and documentation for survey-grade accuracy when required for mapping and cadastral deliverables.
  • Process raw aerial data into orthomosaics, digital surface models (DSM), digital terrain models (DTM), point clouds, and inspection imagery using Agisoft Metashape, Pix4D Mapper, DroneDeploy, or similar photogrammetry and LiDAR processing suites and perform QA/QC on outputs.
  • Produce, annotate, and deliver client-ready products and reports (aerial imagery, 3D models, inspection reports, thermal analysis, vegetation indices) with clear methodology, metadata, georeferencing, and recommended next steps.
  • Perform detailed visual and thermal inspections of infrastructure assets (powerlines, towers, solar arrays, roofs, bridges, pipelines) capturing imagery and ancillary data, identifying defects, anomalies, and areas requiring immediate remediation and creating prioritized action lists.
  • Execute night operations, beyond-visual-line-of-sight (BVLOS) flights, or specialized missions only after acquiring the appropriate waivers/permissions and following approved mitigations, safety cases, and contingency planning.
  • Manage in-field client relations during missions: present safety briefings, secure site access/clearances, gather client requirements and tailor flight parameters to business objectives while documenting consent and site-specific constraints.
  • Maintain detailed flight logs, mission reports, incident/near-miss records, and equipment maintenance records in accordance with company policy and regulatory requirements to support audits, insurance claims, and continuous improvement.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve in-field issues related to GNSS interference, radio frequency conflicts, firmware anomalies, sensor calibration drift, or environmental constraints to minimize downtime and maintain mission timelines.
  • Implement robust safety management practices including pre-flight risk assessments (SORA where applicable), SWA/hazard mitigation, emergency response planning, and coordination with local airspace users or air traffic control as required.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams—surveyors, engineers, environmental scientists, construction managers, and editors—to align data capture specifications (resolution, coverage, nadir vs. oblique captures) with downstream analysis and deliverable formats.
  • Train and mentor junior UAS pilots and ground crew on standard operating procedures (SOPs), emergency procedures, payload handling, regulatory updates, and best practices for data collection and aircraft maintenance.
  • Ensure data security, chain-of-custody, and client confidentiality when transferring large datasets, using encrypted media, secure cloud storage, and adhering to company IT and data retention policies.
  • Prepare cost estimates, flight resource plans, and time/schedule forecasts for UAS projects; help scope proposals with equipment, personnel, and regulatory considerations to support business development and project managers.
  • Maintain situational awareness and log environmental conditions affecting missions—wind, precipitation, temperature, electromagnetic interference—and adapt operational decisions to ensure safety and data integrity.
  • Stay current with evolving UAS regulations, airspace management tools, and industry best practices; implement process improvements and recommend new equipment or software upgrades to enhance mission capability and efficiency.
  • Participate in accident/incident investigations and lessons-learned reviews; contribute to corrective actions, SOP updates, and training curricula to reduce recurrence and improve safety culture.
  • Conduct routine battery, charger and power system management including safe charging practices, storage, lifecycle monitoring, and disposal in accordance with manufacturer and safety guidelines.
  • Support rapid-response or emergency deployment missions (damage assessment, SAR support, oil spill monitoring) with quick mobilization, adaptable mission planning, and cross-agency coordination when required.

Secondary Functions

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Valid FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate (or equivalent jurisdictional UAS license) with demonstrated currency and understanding of airspace rules and NOTAM/LAANC access.
  • Proven proficiency with mission-planning and flight-control software (e.g., DroneDeploy, Pix4Dcapture, DJI Terra, UgCS, Litchi, QGroundControl) to design and execute complex flight plans.
  • Hands-on experience operating popular UAS platforms (DJI Mavic/Phantom/Inspire/Matrice, Autel, senseFly, Wingtra) and integrating third-party payloads like LiDAR (RIEGL, Velodyne), multispectral (MicaSense), and thermal sensors (FLIR).
  • Photogrammetry and 3D reconstruction skills: ability to configure image acquisition parameters (overlap, GSD, exposure), place GCPs, and produce orthomosaics, DSMs, DTMs, and point clouds in Agisoft Metashape, Pix4D, or similar.
  • LiDAR data collection and point-cloud processing fundamentals (registration, filtering, classification) and the ability to use LiDAR processing tools (LAStools, CloudCompare, Terrasolid).
  • RTK/PPK GNSS workflows and experience ensuring geospatial accuracy for mapping and surveying deliverables.
  • Inspection imaging and thermal analysis skills, including defect recognition in imagery and generation of inspection reports with annotated photogrammetric overlays.
  • Data management and processing: large dataset handling, cloud upload (AWS, Azure, DroneDeploy cloud), basic GIS competencies (ArcGIS/QGIS), and exporting deliverables in common geospatial formats (GeoTIFF, LAS, OBJ).

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent with documented UAS training and Part 107 (or equivalent) certification.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in Aviation, Aerial Photography, Geomatics, GIS, Surveying, Civil Engineering, Remote Sensing, Environmental Science, or related technical discipline.
