Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Measure room dimensions, examine project blueprints and plans, and lay out marks and cut-lines to ensure accurate and efficient installation of drywall panels for walls, ceilings and bulkheads in both new construction and renovation projects.
  • Cut, shape and trim gypsum board, plasterboard, cement board and other panel products using power saws, utility knives, jigsaws and T-squares to create tight-fitting seams and clean edges around openings, corners and fixtures.
  • Lift, carry and fasten drywall panels to wood or metal studs and ceiling joists using screw guns, nails, rivets, or adhesive systems while maintaining stable, level and plumb surfaces on vertical and horizontal assemblies.
  • Install metal corner bead, corner guards, reveals and control joints to protect exposed corners and create crisp lines, ensuring beads are nailed, crimped or taped and bedded correctly to minimize cracking.
  • Apply paper or fiberglass tape to panel seams, inside corners and fastener heads, bed tape in joint compound, and build multiple coats of mud to create a seamless, smooth surface ready for sanding and final finish.
  • Perform multi-coat finishing operations (taping, filling, feathering and sanding) to achieve level 0–5 finishes per project specifications, including special finishes such as smooth, orange peel, knockdown or custom textures.
  • Use sanding blocks, pole sanders and abrasive tools to prepare surfaces for painting or wallpapering while minimizing dust and protecting surrounding surfaces with drop cloths, plastic sheeting and containment methods.
  • Install soundproofing and fire-rated assemblies—including resilient channels, sound-deadening panels and fire-rated gypsum—by following manufacturer and code specifications to meet acoustic and fire-rating requirements.
  • Read and interpret architectural drawings, submittals, shop drawings and specification manuals to sequence work, confirm material types and thicknesses, and coordinate with other trades to prevent conflicts.
  • Set up and operate drywall lifts, scaffolding, scaffolding towers and aerial lifts safely to position large panels on high walls and ceilings, following OSHA and site-specific fall protection procedures.
  • Perform finish carpentry related to drywall work such as installing blocking, backer boards, edge trims, reveals and openings for electrical, HVAC and plumbing fixtures prior to hanging drywall.
  • Measure, order and stage drywall materials, fasteners, tapes, joint compounds, beads and trim to support scheduled production; manage inventory and report shortages to supervisors for timely reordering.
  • Inspect completed work for flatness, straightness, finish quality and adherence to plans and specifications; identify imperfections, perform corrective patching and document completion for quality control and sign-off.
  • Repair water-damaged, cracked or compromised drywall in renovation and remediation projects by removing affected areas, treating substrates, replacing panels and restoring finishes to match existing surfaces.
  • Install specialty panels such as cement board, tile backer board, mold- and moisture-resistant board in bathrooms, kitchens and wet areas following manufacturer recommendations and waterproofing protocols.
  • Coordinate with painters, finishers, framers and subcontractors to sequence finishing, painting and trim work; communicate scheduling constraints, access and protection requirements to minimize rework and site delays.
  • Follow environmental controls and containment procedures during sanding and demolition to limit dust migration and mitigate exposure to silica and gypsum dust; use HEPA vacuums and wet sanding techniques where required.
  • Maintain and calibrate hand and power tools, screw guns, sanders and measuring devices; perform basic tool repairs and request replacements to ensure safe, efficient operations.
  • Enforce jobsite safety by using personal protective equipment (PPE), performing hazard assessments, complying with OSHA regulations and participating in toolbox talks and safety meetings.
  • Apply adhesives, sealants and sound-deadening materials where required for specialty assemblies, and ensure proper curing times before proceeding with subsequent trades.
  • Prepare detailed jobsite logs and daily reports capturing materials used, hours worked, change-orders, site conditions and issues that could affect schedule, budget or quality; escalate concerns to project management.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist project management with material takeoffs, estimating quantities of drywall, tape, mud and trim for bids and proposals.
  • Train and mentor apprentices and junior installers on best practices for hanging, taping, finishing and safe tool operation.
  • Participate in pre-construction meetings and mock-ups to validate finish expectations and approve textures or paint-ready surfaces with clients or architects.
  • Help maintain clean, organized staging and storage areas to reduce material waste and prevent damage to sheet goods.
  • Support site-wide safety inspections and audits by documenting compliance and remediation actions for hazardous conditions.
  • Perform light carpentry and blocking installations to facilitate future fixture mounting and millwork integration.
  • Coordinate with suppliers and logistics to verify deliveries, inspect material quality upon arrival, and track warranty information for specialty panels.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by recommending tools, techniques or process changes that reduce rework and increase productivity.
  • Assist in small punch-list close-out items including touch-up mudding, sanding and minor repairs to achieve final acceptance from clients and inspectors.
  • Operate basic cleanup equipment and participate in final site cleanup to ensure the space is ready for subsequent trades or client turnover.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
High school diploma or GED; comfortable reading construction documents and performing basic arithmetic for measurements and material takeoffs.

Preferred Education:
Completion of a formal drywall apprenticeship program, vocational/trade school certificate in construction trades, or NCCER certification in drywall or finishing.
