Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate dump trucks (Class A or Class B as required) to transport bulk construction and demolition materials safely between supply yards, quarries, job sites, and disposal facilities, following assigned routes and schedule constraints.

  • Maintain compliance with DOT Hours of Service regulations and company policies by accurately completing driver logbooks or using electronic logging devices (ELDs) and submitting logs as required for audits.
  • Collect, record, and submit accurate weight tickets, delivery receipts, load manifests, and chain-of-custody documentation for each haul to support invoicing and regulatory compliance.
  • Navigate congested job sites, confined spaces, and public roadways safely, using spotters when necessary; perform safe backing and spotting maneuvers to minimize risk to personnel and equipment.
  • Follow traffic laws, load securement standards, and hazardous material handling restrictions (if applicable) while transporting materials to ensure public and worker safety.
  • Communicate effectively with dispatch, site supervisors, other drivers, and traffic controllers via two-way radio, mobile devices, or in-person to coordinate arrivals, pickups, delays, and special handling instructions.
  • Adhere to site-specific safety plans, PPE requirements, and environmental controls (e.g., dust suppression, spill prevention) and participate in site safety briefings and toolbox talks.
  • Execute emergency response procedures including securing loads, activating safety systems, and reporting incidents immediately to supervisory and safety teams; assist with accident documentation and follow-up.
  • Conduct basic on-site maintenance such as topping off fluids, checking tire pressure, cleaning windows and lights, and performing minor repairs or adjustments to ensure truck readiness between scheduled maintenance.
  • Coordinate with routing and logistics teams to optimize haul routes for fuel efficiency, traffic avoidance, and on-time deliveries; adapt to route changes due to weather, road closures, or site conditions.
  • Operate specialty dump bodies (e.g., end-dump, side-dump, transfer trailers) and attachments safely and according to manufacturer guidelines when assigned, including coupling and uncoupling trailers.
  • Uphold company standards for customer service and site relations by arriving on time, being professional on site, and communicating courteously with clients and third parties.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of assigned vehicle and any issued tools or equipment, ensuring all safety devices (cones, flags, chains) are present and serviceable.
  • Support recycling and waste diversion efforts by segregating materials as required by jobsite procedures and municipal regulations during hauling and unloading operations.
  • Verify load compatibility and document any over-dimensional or overweight loads; obtain permits and escorts as required in coordination with dispatch or permitting teams.
  • Participate in driver training and refresher programs as required to remain current on safe driving practices, regulatory changes, and new equipment operation.
  • Monitor weather and road conditions and take proactive measures (route changes, delay notification, securements) to protect safety and cargo integrity.
  • Follow fuel and fuel card procedures, log fuel purchases accurately, and report discrepancies to fleet management for reconciliation.
  • Assist mechanics and maintenance teams by isolating issues, providing detailed defect descriptions, and participating in post-repair road tests when requested.
  • Keep strict confidentiality of site documents and manifests and ensure that sensitive shipment details are only shared with authorized personnel.
  • Support site logistics by assisting with traffic control, temporary road grading, or minor stabilization tasks as directed by site supervisors while maintaining license and equipment limitations.
  • Provide mentorship and on-the-job coaching to junior drivers or apprentices, demonstrating safe techniques for loading, unloading, and vehicle operation.
  • Complete routine administrative tasks associated with driving assignments including time sheets, incident reports, and vehicle inspection logs to ensure accurate payroll and compliance records.
