Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Serve as the primary consultant for clients on all aspects of their digital publishing strategy, from manuscript to market, providing actionable recommendations to enhance their digital presence.
- Develop and implement robust, scalable, and efficient end-to-end e-publishing workflows, including XML-first processes, to streamline content production and reduce time-to-market.
- Manage the complex process of converting source files (e.g., InDesign, Word, PDF) into high-quality, valid EPUB3 and Kindle formats, ensuring compatibility across a wide range of e-reading devices and platforms.
- Conduct rigorous quality assurance (QA) checks on all digital files, meticulously identifying and resolving formatting, functionality, and display issues to guarantee a superior reader experience.
- Provide expert guidance on metadata strategy, championing the use of ONIX and other industry standards to optimize content discoverability, search engine ranking, and sales potential on retail sites.
- Oversee the entire digital distribution process, managing the submission of e-books and metadata to a global network of retail and library partners, including Amazon, Apple, Kobo, and OverDrive.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical and distribution issues, acting as the key liaison between the client, conversion vendors, and retail platform support teams.
- Advise clients on Digital Rights Management (DRM) strategies, weighing the benefits and drawbacks of different approaches to protect intellectual property while maximizing accessibility.
- Analyze digital sales data, market trends, and competitor performance to provide clients with strategic insights and recommendations for pricing, promotion, and content acquisition.
- Lead backlist digitization projects, developing a strategic plan for converting legacy print titles into a profitable digital catalog.
- Train and mentor client staff on new digital publishing technologies, software (like Adobe InDesign's export features), and best practices to build their internal capabilities.
- Evaluate, recommend, and assist in the implementation of digital publishing tools, content management systems (CMS), and digital asset management (DAM) platforms.
- Ensure all digital publications meet or exceed accessibility standards (such as WCAG and EPUB Accessibility 1.0) to make content available to readers with disabilities.
- Manage relationships with third-party vendors, including conversion houses, technology providers, and distribution services, ensuring quality, cost-effectiveness, and timely delivery.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation for all e-publishing processes, standards, and workflows to ensure consistency and facilitate team training.
- Consult on direct-to-consumer (D2C) e-commerce strategies, helping clients build and optimize their own online storefronts for selling digital products.
- Collaborate closely with editorial, marketing, and design teams to ensure a cohesive and integrated approach to print and digital product development and promotion.
- Stay at the forefront of the e-publishing industry by continuously researching emerging technologies, new standards (like W3C publications), and evolving retail platform requirements.
- Perform detailed content and structural analysis of manuscripts and layouts to proactively identify potential challenges in the digital conversion process.
- Create and manage enhanced e-book features, such as embedded audio/video, interactivity, and pop-up footnotes, to create premium digital products.
