Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Receive, unload, and stage incoming shipments of electronic waste, including computers, monitors, printers, and mobile devices.
  • Meticulously sort electronic items based on type, condition, material composition, and downstream processing requirements.
  • Systematically dismantle a variety of electronic devices using a range of hand tools, power tools, and specialized equipment to separate components.
  • Identify and carefully segregate hazardous materials, such as lithium-ion batteries, mercury-containing lamps, and leaded glass, according to strict safety and environmental protocols.
  • Operate industrial recycling machinery, such as balers, shredders, and conveyors, while adhering to all operational and safety guidelines.
  • Perform data destruction on hard drives and other data-bearing devices using approved software wiping and physical destruction methods to ensure data security.
  • Test, diagnose, and grade the functionality of electronic components and whole units to determine their potential for refurbishment and resale.
  • Accurately weigh, document, and inventory sorted materials and components using company software or manual logs for tracking and reporting purposes.
  • Prepare, package, and palletize processed materials and refurbished equipment for secure shipment to downstream vendors or customers.
  • Consistently meet or exceed established production goals and quality standards for sorting, dismantling, and processing materials.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized workstation and contribute to the overall cleanliness of the warehouse environment.
  • Strictly adhere to all company safety policies, including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Conduct quality control inspections on sorted materials to ensure they meet the specifications of recycling partners.
  • Assist in loading and unloading trucks, ensuring proper handling and securing of materials to prevent damage or safety incidents.
  • Identify different types of plastics, metals, and circuit boards to maximize material value and ensure proper recycling streams.
  • Operate a forklift or pallet jack to safely move materials and pallets throughout the warehouse facility.
  • Perform basic preventative maintenance and cleaning on tools and processing equipment to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
  • Document and report any operational, safety, or environmental issues to the shift supervisor or manager in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with team members to optimize workflow, troubleshoot processing challenges, and achieve collective team objectives.
  • Participate in ongoing training programs related to safety, environmental compliance (e.g., R2, e-Stewards), and new processing techniques.

Secondary Functions

  • Support the warehouse team with general housekeeping tasks to maintain a tidy and hazard-free work environment.
  • Contribute ideas and feedback during team meetings to support continuous improvement in safety, quality, and productivity.
  • Assist in the training and onboarding of new E-Waste Workers by demonstrating proper procedures and safety protocols.
  • Participate actively in regular safety drills, meetings, and workplace inspections to promote a strong safety culture.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficiency in using various hand and power tools (e.g., drills, screwdrivers, pry bars).
  • Ability to identify a wide range of electronic devices and their primary components.
  • Experience operating a forklift, pallet jack, or other material handling equipment (certification preferred).
  • Knowledge of safe handling procedures for hazardous materials, particularly batteries and CRT monitors.
  • Basic computer literacy for data entry, inventory tracking, and using data destruction software.
  • Mechanical aptitude for disassembling complex electronic units efficiently.
  • Familiarity with operating industrial machinery like balers or shredders.
  • Understanding of different commodity grades (e.g., metals, plastics, circuit boards).
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks with consistent precision and speed.
  • Knowledge of environmental and recycling industry standards such as R2 or e-Stewards is a strong plus.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Vocational training or a technical certificate in electronics, warehousing, or a related field.

Relevant Fields of Study:

  • Warehouse and Logistics Management

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 0-2 years

Preferred: Prior experience in a recycling, manufacturing, warehouse, or general labor environment is highly desirable. Any experience working with electronics or demonstrating a mechanical aptitude is a significant advantage. A stable work history and a proven commitment to safety are essential.
