Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Oversee the day-to-day educational operations of early childhood classrooms, ensuring a safe, healthy, and stimulating learning environment for all children.
  • Develop, evaluate, and refine a high-quality, research-based curriculum that is developmentally, culturally, and linguistically appropriate and aligns with state standards and program philosophy (e.g., NAEYC, Head Start).
  • Provide ongoing coaching, mentorship, and reflective supervision to teaching staff to enhance instructional practices, classroom management, and professional growth.
  • Conduct regular classroom observations using standardized tools (such as CLASS or ECERS/ITERS) and provide constructive, actionable feedback to support continuous quality improvement.
  • Plan, coordinate, and facilitate engaging and relevant professional development, workshops, and training for all early childhood education staff.
  • Lead the recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and performance evaluation process for teachers and classroom assistants, fostering a collaborative and positive team culture.
  • Ensure all program activities and classroom environments consistently meet and exceed state and local licensing regulations, health and safety standards, and accreditation criteria.
  • Partner with teaching staff to implement and monitor child screening and assessment protocols (e.g., ASQ, DRDP, Teaching Strategies GOLD) to track developmental progress and inform lesson planning.
  • Collaborate with families to build strong partnerships, providing resources and support for their child's development and facilitating family engagement activities and workshops.
  • Manage and resolve concerns from parents and staff in a timely, professional, and compassionate manner, promoting open communication and a sense of community.
  • Develop and manage the budget for educational materials, classroom supplies, and professional development, ensuring responsible allocation of resources.
  • Analyze child assessment data and program evaluation results to identify trends, measure outcomes, and drive data-informed decisions for program enhancement.
  • Model best practices by working directly with children in classrooms, demonstrating effective teaching strategies and interactions.
  • Coordinate services for children with diverse learning needs or disabilities, working with families and specialists to develop and implement Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) or support plans.
  • Lead the program's accreditation or re-accreditation process with organizations like the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records, including staff files, child assessment data, and compliance documentation, ensuring all paperwork is up-to-date.
  • Foster a culture of inquiry and continuous learning among staff, encouraging them to stay current with best practices and research in the field of early childhood education.
  • Represent the organization at community meetings, conferences, and collaborative partnerships to advocate for high-quality early childhood education.
  • Design and implement strategies for positive behavior guidance and social-emotional learning across all classrooms, providing support to teachers on individual child behavior plans.
  • Guide the integration of technology in the classroom in a manner that is purposeful, interactive, and developmentally appropriate.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Curriculum Development & Implementation: Deep knowledge of early childhood curricula such as The Creative Curriculum, HighScope, or Reggio Emilia.
  • Child Assessment Tools: Proficiency with developmental screening and assessment instruments like Teaching Strategies GOLD, DRDP, or ASQ-3/ASQ:SE-2.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Expertise in state and local childcare licensing regulations, health department standards, and Head Start Performance Standards.
  • Staff Supervision & Coaching: Proven ability to conduct performance evaluations, provide reflective supervision, and mentor teaching staff effectively.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 3-5 years of experience in an early childhood setting, with at least 2 years in a supervisory, coaching, or administrative capacity.

  • Experience as a Director or Assistant Director in a licensed, high-quality childcare center or preschool.
  • Direct experience managing compliance with NAEYC accreditation standards and/or Head Start Performance Standards.
