Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Design, plan, and implement a developmentally appropriate, play-based curriculum that addresses the cognitive, social, emotional, and physical needs of all children.
  • Create a welcoming, safe, and stimulating classroom environment that encourages curiosity, exploration, and a love for learning.
  • Conduct ongoing, systematic observations and assessments of each child's development, using the data to inform curriculum planning and individualize instruction.
  • Foster positive, respectful, and supportive relationships with children, providing guidance and encouragement to help them build self-esteem and confidence.
  • Establish and maintain open, collaborative, and consistent communication with parents and guardians regarding their child's progress, daily activities, and developmental milestones.
  • Guide children in developing crucial social-emotional skills, such as empathy, cooperation, and conflict resolution, through modeling and positive reinforcement.
  • Promote early literacy and numeracy skills through intentional teaching practices embedded in storytelling, songs, games, and hands-on activities.
  • Ensure the daily care, safety, and well-being of all children by maintaining constant supervision and adhering to all health and safety protocols.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and confidential records, including attendance, developmental checklists, incident reports, and individual child portfolios.
  • Collaborate effectively with co-teachers, support staff, and administration to ensure a cohesive and high-quality educational program across the center.
  • Implement positive behavior guidance strategies and techniques that are constructive and support children in learning self-control and appropriate behaviors.
  • Organize and lead a diverse range of activities, including storytelling, arts and crafts, music and movement, and both structured and unstructured physical play.
  • Adapt teaching methods, classroom environment, and materials to meet the diverse needs of all children, including those with varying abilities and cultural backgrounds.
  • Prepare, arrange, and maintain classroom materials, learning centers, and equipment to ensure an organized and resource-rich learning space.
  • Supervise children attentively during all parts of the day, including indoor/outdoor play, mealtimes, transitions, and rest periods.
  • Uphold all state and local licensing regulations and organizational policies and procedures to ensure the center operates in full compliance.

Secondary Functions

  • Participate actively in ongoing professional development opportunities, staff meetings, and training sessions to stay current with best practices in early childhood education.
  • Assist in the planning and execution of center-wide events, such as parent-teacher conferences, family engagement nights, and seasonal celebrations.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of the center's programs and policies by providing constructive feedback and innovative ideas.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and inviting classroom aesthetic, including the regular sanitizing of toys, surfaces, and equipment.
  • Support new team members and student teachers by providing guidance, mentorship, and a positive example of professionalism and care.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Deep Knowledge of Child Development Theories and Milestones (birth to age 5).
  • Curriculum Planning and Implementation (experience with Emergent, Reggio Emilia, or other play-based philosophies is a plus).
  • Child Assessment and Observation Techniques (e.g., anecdotal notes, running records, portfolio creation).
  • Pediatric First Aid and CPR Certification.
  • Thorough understanding of state/local licensing regulations and health/safety standards.
  • Proficiency with classroom technology and parent communication applications (e.g., Brightwheel, Tadpoles, Storypark).

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Associate's Degree in Early Childhood Education (ECE) or a related field, OR a current Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential.

Preferred Education:

Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education (ECE), Child Development, or a related discipline.

Typical Experience Range:
