Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Design, plan, and implement a developmentally appropriate, play-based curriculum that aligns with the school's philosophy and early learning standards.
  • Foster a nurturing, safe, and stimulating classroom environment that encourages exploration, creativity, and respect for others.
  • Conduct ongoing, authentic assessments of children's developmental progress using observation, portfolios, and formal assessment tools to inform instruction.
  • Cultivate strong, positive relationships with children, building trust and providing a secure emotional base for learning and social interaction.
  • Establish and maintain open, collaborative communication with parents and guardians, providing regular updates on their child's progress through daily reports, newsletters, and conferences.

  • Prepare and organize classroom materials, activities, and learning centers that support lesson plans and developmental goals.

  • Supervise children actively and attentively during all activities, including classroom time, meals, rest periods, and outdoor play.
  • Adapt teaching methods, curriculum, and the physical environment to meet the diverse individual needs of all children, including those with varying abilities and learning styles.
  • Facilitate rich learning experiences by skillfully balancing child-led inquiry with teacher-guided instruction.
  • Document children's learning experiences and milestones through detailed observations, photographs, and work samples to create meaningful child portfolios.

  • Actively collaborate with co-teachers, support staff, and administration to develop school-wide initiatives and maintain a cohesive educational program.

  • Mentor and provide guidance to assistant teachers, floaters, and volunteers within the classroom.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records, including attendance, meal counts, accident reports, and child development files.
  • Assist in planning and participating in school-wide events such as open houses, family engagement nights, and community celebrations.
  • Manage classroom inventory, communicating the need for new supplies, materials, and equipment to the center director.
  • Uphold all state and local licensing requirements, health and safety codes, and accreditation standards (e.g., NAEYC) at all times.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Curriculum Development: Expertise in designing and implementing age-appropriate curricula, with experience in emergent, play-based, or specific philosophies like Reggio Emilia or Montessori.
  • Child Development Knowledge: Deep understanding of developmental milestones and theories for children aged 0-5 across cognitive, social-emotional, physical, and language domains.
  • Early Childhood Assessment: Proficiency in using formal and informal assessment tools (e.g., Ages & Stages Questionnaires, DRDP, anecdotal records) to track progress and guide instruction.
  • First Aid & CPR Certification: Current certification in Infant/Child First Aid and CPR is mandatory.
  • Knowledge of Licensing Regulations: Familiarity with state and local childcare licensing standards and health/safety protocols.
  • Technology Integration: Competence in using classroom technology and parent communication apps (e.g., Brightwheel, Procare, Tadpoles).

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or a closely related field.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 1-3 years of direct teaching experience in a licensed preschool or childcare center.
