Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct independent and collaborative research on the fundamental physics of earthquake nucleation, rupture propagation, and termination.
  • Develop, validate, and apply advanced numerical and computational models to simulate earthquake processes and seismic ground motion.
  • Analyze and interpret large, complex seismological and geodetic datasets (e.g., seismic waveforms, GPS, InSAR) to investigate crustal stress and strain.
  • Lead and contribute to the development of comprehensive probabilistic and deterministic seismic hazard assessments (PSHA/DSHA) for critical infrastructure and urban regions.
  • Investigate earthquake source characteristics, including magnitude, focal mechanisms, and stress drop, using advanced inversion techniques.
  • Publish original research findings in high-impact, peer-reviewed scientific journals and present results at national and international conferences.
  • Design, propose, and execute research projects, including writing and submitting grant proposals to secure funding from agencies like NSF, USGS, and DOE.
  • Perform advanced signal processing and time-series analysis on seismic and other geophysical data streams to detect and characterize subtle signals.
  • Study the structure and properties of the Earth's lithosphere and mantle using seismic tomography and other imaging techniques.
  • Participate in post-earthquake rapid response and field reconnaissance efforts to collect perishable data and document geological effects.
  • Develop and maintain scientific software, code, and analysis pipelines for seismic data processing, modeling, and visualization.
  • Investigate the link between human activities (e.g., fluid injection, mining) and induced seismicity through data analysis and physical modeling.
  • Mentor graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and junior scientists, providing guidance on research direction and professional development.
  • Evaluate and improve real-time earthquake detection, location, and magnitude estimation algorithms for earthquake early warning systems.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and provide expert seismological consultation for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the organization's long-term data management strategy, including data archiving, quality control, and accessibility standards.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Deep expertise in theoretical and observational seismology, including seismic wave propagation, source theory, and signal processing.
  • High proficiency in scientific programming and data analysis using languages such as Python (with ObsPy, NumPy, SciPy) and/or MATLAB.
  • Experience with seismic data processing software packages (e.g., SAC, SEISAN, Antelope).
  • Strong background in numerical modeling, finite difference/element methods, and high-performance computing (HPC) environments.
  • Proven experience analyzing geophysical datasets, including seismic waveforms, GPS, and/or InSAR data.
  • Knowledge of geophysical inverse theory and its application to problems like source inversion or seismic tomography.
  • Familiarity with developing or applying machine learning and AI techniques to large geoscience datasets.
  • Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software (e.g., QGIS, ArcGIS) for spatial analysis and data visualization.
  • Competency in Unix/Linux operating systems and shell scripting for data management and workflow automation.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
